Job summary

JBG SMITH is seeking an Assistant Chief Engineer in the Washington, DC area to oversee maintenance operations for a portfolio of properties. You will supervise staff, manage budgets, and drive energy-saving initiatives while ensuring compliance with safety and building standards.

The role requires extensive hands-on maintenance experience, DC boiler licensing, and strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems. This position is full-time and on-site with weekend/on-call expectations.

Qualifications

• 8+ years of General Facility Operations/Maintenance/Repair experience in stationary engineering, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire protection or related facilities maintenance.
• 5+ years in mechanical operations maintaining boilers, chillers and HVAC systems in large facilities.
• Experience with asset inventories and a CMMS; familiarity with building automation systems is preferred.
• Ability to read construction documents, blueprints, pneumatic or electric control drawings; OSHA 30 training is preferred.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office to prepare reports and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Manage performance and personnel issues; conduct corrective action meetings; evaluate staff; develop professional development plans; coach reports on duties and performance.
• Coordinate toolbox meetings and orientations to meet company standards.
• Identify staffing needs and help set schedules to optimize labor utilization; assist in hiring decisions.
• Implement safety programs and ensure compliance with company standards.
• Oversee budgets, approve requisitions, and manage supplies, parts, tools, and equipment inventories.
• Develop and implement energy conservation programs; recommend equipment upgrades to reduce energy use.
