The Assistant Chief Engineer is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Engineering department, ensuring the safe, efficient, and continuous operation of all hotel systems, equipment, and infrastructure. This role plays a critical part in maintaining the physical integrity of the property while supporting overall hotel operations, guest satisfaction, and regulatory compliance in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Direct and oversee all engineering and maintenance operations across the property, including guestrooms, public areas, back-of-house spaces, kitchens, laundry, and grounds.
  • Manage departmental administrative functions, including typing, filing, reporting, communications, and recordkeeping.
  • Coordinate meetings, prepare agendas, and record and distribute minutes.
  • Develop, standardize, and maintain internal documentation, logs, and operational procedures.
  • Utilize and administer the Computerized Maintenance Management System to track work orders, asset history, and preventive maintenance schedules.
  • Ensure the proper functioning of all building systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and life-safety systems.
  • Establish and manage preventive and routine maintenance programs to ensure optimal equipment performance and minimize downtime.
  • Conduct regular walk-through inspections to assess the safety, efficiency, and condition of the property and its systems.
  • Verify timely completion of maintenance tasks and work orders across all areas of the hotel.
  • Supervise and coordinate repairs, renovations, and capital improvement projects.
  • Lead, train, and supervise engineering team members, including assigning daily work orders and managing shift operations.
  • Prepare weekly schedules to ensure adequate coverage aligned with business demands.
  • Participate in recruitment efforts, including interviewing, hiring, onboarding, and training new team members.
  • Support employee development and conduct performance evaluations, providing ongoing coaching and feedback.
  • Oversee third-party contractors and service vendors, ensuring work is completed to standard, on time, and within budget.
  • Manage bidding processes, contracts, and service agreements in accordance with corporate purchasing policies.
  • Coordinate parts and supply procurement, ensuring timely availability of materials for maintenance and projects.
  • Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, including OSHA standards and safety protocols.
  • Maintain up-to-date records of all facility licenses, certifications, and permits, including renewal tracking.
  • Enforce safety procedures for personnel, equipment, and property.
  • Maintain inventory and proper usage of PPE, tools, and maintenance supplies.
  • Respond promptly to guest and internal requests, ensuring a high level of service and timely resolution of issues.
  • Address maintenance-related concerns and escalation when necessary to ensure guest satisfaction.
  • Maintain a visible presence in the hotel to proactively identify and resolve issues.
  • Serve as a key responder for emergency situations on a 24/7 on-call basis, coordinating resources and support as needed.
  • Collaborate with hotel leadership to support overall operational goals, special projects, and departmental initiatives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Management.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Hospitality Management, or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in engineering or facilities management, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Prior experience in a full-service hotel or high-volume commercial property strongly preferred.
  • Proven track record managing building systems, preventive maintenance programs, and capital improvement projects.
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Strong technical knowledge of mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and life-safety systems.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Effective communication skills with the ability to interact professionally with guests, team members, and vendors.
  • Solid problem-solving and decision-making abilities, with a proactive and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards, OSHA regulations, and risk management practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and maintenance management software systems.
  • Ability to respond calmly and effectively in emergency situations, including after-hours availability.
  • Detail-oriented with strong recordkeeping and documentation skills.

Fast-paced environment, multiple tasks to be handled under time constraint. Must be able to bend, crouch, kneel, and twist in the work area. The role involves frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, lifting, pushing, and pulling objects weighing up to 250lbs. often for extended periods. Must be able to maneuver around property. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time. Must be able to operate a computer, telephone, and copier. Must have manual dexterity to operate all office equipment.
