Job summary

JLL in Austin, TX is seeking an Assistant Chief Engineer to lead building operations and supervise cross‑shift teams, ensuring 24/7 reliability and compliance with safety standards.

The role requires strong technical expertise across building systems and hands‑on cost control, scheduling, and vendor management. A CFC license and 5+ years in facility/plant engineering are expected, with a focus on safety and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Universal CFC License.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Facility/Plant Engineering Maintenance.
  • Exposure to HVAC, fluid handling/pumping, fluid filtering, mechanical systems, welding, and electrical systems engineering and operation.
  • Knowledge of all current facility code requirements and standards.
  • Good interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats.
  • Proficiency in basic computer application software such as MS Office, Lotus and Email.
  • Two years of trades schooling in electrical system design, refrigeration, and HVAC.
  • NAPE or trade school certifications.
  • Experience managing operations teams across multiple shifts.
  • Familiarity with critical environments management protocols.
  • Experience with Critical Environment Work Authorization documentation
  • Understanding of building logs and documentation practices.
  • Background in budget development and cost control for facility operations.

Responsibilities

  • Managing daily work assignments and coordinating facilities contracted services, including scheduling activities with engineering teams, clients, and service providers for Fire Life Safety, HVAC, Elevators, and Electrical systems
  • Establishing and managing employee work schedules across multiple and rotating shifts, making assignments, procuring materials, and documenting work progress and results
  • Conducting employee reviews and performance management while orienting, training, and developing team members through established standards and objectives
  • Providing on-call support and emergency response, including writing and submitting Critical Environment Work Authorization documentation for work involving critical systems
  • Performing field checks and oversight activities to ensure compliance with service intervals required by contracts, including scheduling and supervising contractors
  • Developing material and labor cost estimates for corrective/maintenance work orders, preventative maintenance activities, and construction projects while helping establish and maintain capital, repair, and maintenance budgets
  • Interacting with customer representatives regarding engineering compliance requirements and coordinating work activities to communicate project purpose, duration, potential disruptions, and other relevant conditions

What this job involves

The Assistant Chief Engineer plays a critical leadership role in managing building operations for a high-stakes facility. You'll direct operations teams across multiple shifts, coordinate preventive maintenance programs, and oversee compliance with OSHA and client safety standards. This position requires technical expertise across building systems combined with strong people management capabilities. You'll work collaboratively to ensure 24/7 operational excellence, managing everything from critical environment protocols to contractor relationships, while maintaining budgets and driving continuous improvement initiatives that enhance both safety and client satisfaction.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
  • This job requires working in a professional office setting
  • May be required to lift up to 50 pounds
  • May be working indoors and outdoors in a range of temperatures that may vary from hot to cold
  • Bending, lifting, twisting and standing for long hours may be required
  • The typical work environment involves potentially high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations that require adherence to prescribed safety policies, procedures and precautions
