Qualifications

  • Licensed to practice law in Louisiana and in good standing with the Louisiana Supreme Court.
  • Extensive experience in defending tort litigation, with at least five years of increasing responsibility.
  • Strong substantive knowledge of medical malpractice litigation and related statutes.
  • Excellent judgment, ethics, and professional integrity.
  • Proficient in English; able to manage time and priorities; proficient with standard computer software.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all tort suits against the State, state agencies, state officials, and state employees within the designated section.
  • Supervise all employees assigned to the section.
  • Act as subject matter expert for all cases in the designated section.
  • Coordinate defense of medical malpractice claims in the medical review panel process and subsequent lawsuits.
  • Execute directives from the Director or Deputy Director.
  • Monitor caseloads and assign new cases to attorneys.
  • Coordinate cases with Office of Risk Management, exempted institutions, and third-party administrators.
  • Review and evaluate settlement requests and appellate review opportunities.
  • Mentor and train employees within the section.
  • Conduct regular visits to regional offices.
  • Communicate with other divisions, including the Solicitor General’s office, regarding cases.
  • Submit accurate and contemporaneous billing.
  • Maintain timely reports of job location and communicate with contract defense counsel.
  • Delegate non-lawyer duties to appropriate staff.
  • Stay current on applicable legislation and jurisprudence.
  • May serve as assigned defense counsel to ensure efficient operation of the section.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

The Department of Justice, Office of Attorney General Liz Murrill, is seeking applications for an Assistant Attorney General/Section Chief in the Litigation Division, Medical Malpractice Section. Salary offered will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected.
The position will be domiciled in the Livingston Building, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, East Baton Rouge Parish. Offers of employment are contingent upon satisfactory background check, drug testing, and reference verifications.

Minimum Qualifications:

The duties and requirements of an Assistant Attorney General/Section Chief of Medical Malpractice in the Litigation Division shall include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Primarily responsible for the supervision of all tort suits against the State, state agencies, state officials, and state employees that fall within his/her designated subject matter section, whether assigned to Assistant Attorneys General or contract defense counsel;
  2. Primarily responsible for the supervision of all employees assigned to his/her designated section;
  3. Acts as the subject matter expert for all cases in his/her designated section;
  4. Coordinates the defense of claims of medical malpractice in both the medical review panel process and in subsequent lawsuits;
  5. Executes directives from the Director or Deputy Director;
  6. Responsible for monitoring caseloads of attorneys assigned to his/her designated section and for reviewing and assigning new cases to such attorneys;
  7. Responsible for the coordination of any cases that fall within his/her designated section with the Office of Risk Management, any exempted institution, and any third party administrator;
  8. Reviews, evaluates, and considers requests to settle litigated or non-litigated claims and requests to seek appellate review;
  9. Serves as mentor and training resource for employees assigned to section and for employees who defend cases that fall within his/her designated subject matter section;
  10. Responsible for conducting regular visits to regional offices;
  11. Communicates with other divisions within the office, including the Solicitor General’s office, regarding cases;
  12. Responsible for submitting accurate and contemporaneous billing;
  13. Reports to assigned job location timely;
  14. Responsible for maintaining regular communication with contract defense counsel;
  15. Responsible for appropriately delegating non-lawyer duties to designated support staff;
  16. Remains current on developing and pertinent legislation and jurisprudence;
  17. May be required to serve as assigned defense counsel as necessary to ensure the efficient operation of the section; and
  18. Performs such other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Deputy Director, Director, Chief Deputy, or Attorney General.
