The Department of Justice, Office of Attorney General Liz Murrill, is seeking applications for an Assistant Attorney General (1-6) in the Litigation Division, based in Shreveport, Louisiana. As part of a Career Progression Group, vacancies may be filled from this recruitment as an Assistant Attorney General 1-6, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant(s).

Salary offered will be commensurate with the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected.

Qualifications

  • Must possess a license to practice law in Louisiana and be in good standing.
  • Ability to travel, including overnight travel, for state-wide appearances and conferences.
  • Experience in handling litigation in federal and state courts is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as primary defense counsel in all stages of litigation from inception to final appeal.
  • Conducts legal research and drafts pleadings, correspondence, and related documents.
  • Identifies and coordinates with experts and witnesses as needed.
  • Communicates developments with supervisors and clients promptly.
  • Performs administrative duties including reporting and travel expense documentation.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable statutes and agency procedures.

The Department of Justice, Office of Attorney General Liz Murrill, is seeking applications for an Assistant Attorney General (1-6) in the Litigation Division. Minimum Qualifications:
  • Must possess a license to practice law in the State of Louisiana;
  • Must be in good standing with the Louisiana Bar Association;
  • Ability to travel (including overnight travel) mainly for state wide, state court appearances, but also for continuing education and other conferences, as required.
PreferredQualifications:
  • Demonstrate the ability to handle litigations in both federal and state courts;
  • Experience in motions practice and presenting oral arguments, in state courts;
  • Knowledge of collections laws, garnishments, state and federal court practice and procedure, and state agency collection practices;
  • Possess excellent oral and written communication skills, including listening and editing;
  • Skill in handling multiple tasks, prioritizing, and meeting deadlines;
  • Possess strong interpersonal skills, foster teamwork, promote a positive work environment that recognizes and respects all employees, and possess good judgement.
The duties and requirements of an Assistant Attorney General in the Litigation division shall include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Serves as primary defense counsel in all assigned cases in all phases of litigation from the inception of the case through final appeal;
  • Performs legal research and drafts all pleadings, correspondence, or other documents in order to accomplish the above enumerated duties;
  • Identifies and secures the assistance of experts and other necessary witnesses;
  • Communicates timely and effectively with supervisors and clients on all developments in cases;
  • Performs all administrative functions attendant to the position including preparation and submission of accurate reports of daily and monthly activities, case assessments, requests for settlement authority, and all documentation related to travel and expenses;
  • Performs all work to comply with the IAT with ORM and LSU;
  • Be punctual in attendance at all matters relating to defense of the cases assigned, maintenance of normal hours, and when required to render professional legal services; as well as, work the necessary hours in order to accomplish the tasks.
