Title

Assistant Attorney General, Elections Section (Election Special Counsel)

Role Summary

The attorney will serve as the agency counsel to the Virginia State Board of Elections and the Virginia Department of Elections, providing legal advice and litigation services related to its election programs and operations. Responsibilities include reviewing election‑related legislation, regulations, and policies; responding to subpoenas and FOIA requests; reviewing legal issues from constituents and the General Assembly; drafting official opinions for the Attorney General.

Work Location & Travel

Position based in Richmond or Fairfax, Virginia; if not based in Richmond, frequent travel to the Richmond headquarters may be required.

Reporting

Reports directly to the Deputy Attorney General for Commerce and Infrastructure.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant experience, including first and second chair trial work in both state and federal courts.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, oral, and technical drafting skills, and the ability to analyze and manage complex cases.
  • Must be admitted to the Virginia State Bar, or able to waive in.
