  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in appellate practice or other litigation, with emphasis on written and oral advocacy and civil litigation and discovery practice.
  • Ability to handle a large, varied caseload and complex cases.
  • Commitment to the ethical practice of law.

Job description

Defend Massachusetts convictions, criminal justice officials, and criminal laws and practices in state and federal courts
Uphold convictions secured by the Attorney General’s Office when challenged in Massachusetts Trial, Appeals, and Supreme Judicial Courts
Respond to federal court challenges to convictions obtained by the AGO and District Attorneys’ Offices, including habeas corpus actions and direct appeals
Represent Massachusetts agencies and officials sued or subpoenaed in relation to criminal justice matters
Handle a large caseload of criminal and civil matters in state and federal trial and appellate courts
Handle appeals and post-conviction matters in Massachusetts courts
Handle federal habeas corpus actions in the United States District Court challenging Massachusetts convictions
Handle First Circuit appeals from grants or denials of habeas corpus relief
Represent judges, clerks, probation officers, prosecutors, officials, and agencies in civil lawsuits or subpoena matters
Defend criminal justice statutes, rules, practices, and procedures against constitutional and other challenges
Contribute to criminal investigations, trial teams, policy initiatives, and amicus activity
