Additionally, the Department of Justice includes the North Carolina State Crime Lab, the North Carolina Justice Academy, and the Sheriffs’ and Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.Description of WorkRecruitment Range: $76,041 - $87,272IMPORTANT NOTE: This posting closes at 11:59:59 PM the night BEFORE the End Date listed.The Workers' Compensation Section investigates, processes and defends claims against departments, agencies and institutions of the State involving workers' compensation law in the North Carolina Industrial Commission pursuant to N.C.G.S. §97-1 and §97-88.2, the North Carolina General Courts of Justice, and federal trial and appellate courts.This position handles Workers' compensation cases involving alleged work-related injuries to State employees. Often, the cases involve more complex factual and legal issues. Cases involving occupational diseases, return-to-work issues, depression, or multiple injuries necessitate extensive investigation, expert testimony, and detailed trial preparation. Case issues range from physical injury to psychological problems, potentially exposing the State to long-term liabilities for expensive medical treatment and wage loss, vocational rehabilitation and permanent injury, resulting in enormous costs to the employer for extended periods.In addition to Workers' compensation matters, this role handles criminal appeals for the State of North Carolina before the North Carolina Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, as assigned by the Attorney General.This position advises clients upon request and on an as-needed basis regarding Workers' Compensation Law and its interplay with other state benefits, risk management issues, legal procedures and Industrial Commission rules and policy.This attorney speaks as needed at staff meetings, seminars and workshops for clients to advise them about the basics of Workers' Compensation law.Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management PreferencesManagement prefers experience in workers’ compensation litigation or experience in civil litigation.Minimum Education and ExperienceSome state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both.
