Stanford University’s Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation (DAPER) seeks an Assistant Athletic Trainer to support varsity programs on campus. You will provide prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries, and help with return-to-play planning alongside physicians and coaches.

You will mentor athletic training fellows and students, maintain confidential medical records, and participate in travel, evenings, and weekend coverage as needed.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in athletic training or related field.
  • Three years’ post-Master’s experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer at the college/university level.
  • Certification by NATA BOC, First Aid/CPR for health care providers, AED, HIPAA training, and California Driver’s License.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the manager in the daily operation of the athletic training facilities, including fellows, graduate students, and interns.
  • Provide care, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses on campus and at game venues.
  • Collaborate with physical therapists on rehabilitation progress and return‑to‑play planning; report status to team physicians, manager, and coaches.
  • Maintain a safe environment, medical supplies, and emergency readiness for practices and venues; ensure confidentiality and regulatory compliance.
  • May provide work direction to other athletic training staff and interns on an ongoing basis.
  • May identify opportunities for international collaboration and recruit qualified international trainees.

The Assistant Athletic Trainer provides comprehensive athletic training services to student-athletes in assigned varsity programs within Stanford’s Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation (DAPER). Responsibilities include injury and illness prevention, assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, emergency care, and return-to-play planning. This position collaborates with physicians, coaches, and sports medicine staff to support student-athlete health, well-being, and performance; mentors advanced postgraduate athletic trainers and athletic training students; and maintains accurate, confidential medical records in accordance with university policies and regulatory requirements. Based on Stanford’s main campus, the role includes practice and competition coverage, travel, and evening and weekend work.

Responsibilities
Core Duties
  • Under general supervision, assist the manager in the daily operation of the athletic training facilities including management of athletic training fellows, graduate students and interns, coordination of medical services and the facilitation of communication between medical providers regarding the status of student athletes undergoing medical treatment.
  • Work with student athletes to provide care, prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries and illnesses both on campus and at game venues. Provide injury prevention measures such as appliances, braces, and devices for control of joint motion and limb protection.
  • Collaborate frequently with physical therapists regarding rehabilitation progress and return-to-play planning of injured athletes. Provide injury reports daily, and report status and progress of injured athletes to team physicians, manager, and coaches on an ongoing basis. Make timely referrals to team physicians for further assessment, testing and evaluation.
  • Maintain a safe environment, medical supplies, and emergency readiness for athletes at all sanctioned practices and at home and away venues. Maintain athletic training and satellite facilities. Practice emergency protocols.
  • Maintain confidentiality of medical information, adherence to regulatory requirements and compliance with team physician guidelines.
  • May provide work direction to other athletic training staff, graduate assistants and interns on an ongoing basis.
  • May identify opportunities for international collaboration and program exposure. Recruit and select qualified international trainees.
Minimum Education

Master's degree in athletic training or related field

Minimum Experience

Three years’ post-Master’s experience as a Certified Athletic Trainer at the college or university level working with high caliber athletes. Experience in positions of leadership at the college or university level.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong communication, administrative, time management and interpersonal skills. Advanced computer skills and demonstrated experience with office software and email applications.
  • Working knowledge of electronic medical record keeping.
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA requirements.
  • Strong clinical skill development.
  • Working knowledge of emerging evidence-based practices.
  • Ability to engage in physically demanding, manual tasks.
Certificates and Licenses Required
  • Certification by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (BOC).
  • First Aid, CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) for health care providers.
  • AED (automated external defibrillator) certification.
  • HIPAA training.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California non-commercial Class C Driver’s License.
