Key Responsibilities
  • Prevent, recognize and assess athletic injuries. Implement preventive and rehabilitation programs to treat athletic injuries using the appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments.
  • Use a variety of therapeutic modalities including, but not limited to, heat, cold, light, sound, electricity and rehabilitation and exercise equipment, and apply bandages, tapes and braces to prevent and treat injuries.
  • Consult with senior Athletic Trainers, physicians, and other health professionals on injuries and treatment plans and coordinate with the coaching staff.
  • Inform coaching staff and other health professionals on the status of injuries and treatment plans.
  • Advise student-athletes on how to prevent injuries and maintain their physical condition. Regularly evaluate their physical condition.
  • Educate and counsel student-athletes and staff regarding conditioning, athletic training and rehabilitation.
  • Assist coaches in designing conditioning programs to prevent injuries.
  • Attend practices and athletic events and provide medical emergency coverage to student-athletes. Travel with sports teams to away games as needed.
  • May provide injury assessment and/or treatment for students involved with the San Jose State University Athletics.
  • Coordinate drug prevention programs and applicable drug testing requirements for student-athletes.
  • Maintain equipment and cleanliness of the athletic training facility.
  • Maintain appropriate medical records of injuries, treatment plans and progress.
  • Chaperone student-athletes during treatment as requested.
  • Provide support to the athletic training curriculum by providing clinical instruction to students enrolled in such classes.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of Athletic Training including conditioning and injury prevention, injury assessment, and rehabilitation.
  • Knowledge of the full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis; other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage; effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment.
  • Familiarity with NCAA rules, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to student-athletes, training sports medicine care, and health and safety.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards for handling Blood Borne Pathogens.
  • Ability to maintain medical records, including HIPAA standards.
  • Ability to assess injuries and their severity.
  • Ability to develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries.
  • Ability to determine appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals.
  • Ability to recognize life‑threatening situations and administer appropriate emergency aid.
  • Computer proficiency for medical, insurance, and record‑keeping functions.
  • Ability to work effectively in environments with competing priorities.
  • Effective communication skills with constituents in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Awareness of emerging technologies, including AI, and willingness to develop skills in their responsible use.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to develop effective relationships with student‑athletes, coaching staff, parents, physicians, and other health care professionals.
  • Ability to travel with sports teams and work nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities. Coursework must include completion of the BOC curriculum requirements.
  • Active BOC (Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer) certification.
  • Active CPR/AED (cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automated external defibrillation) certification for the Professional Rescuer and first aid.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in athletic training or a related field.
  • Intercollegiate or professional sports experience; experience traveling with teams; and experience providing athletic training services at the high school, college, or professional level.
License

A valid driver’s license is required for this position. Out‑of‑state candidates must obtain a California driver’s license within 10 days of hire.

All employees must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses.

Compensation

Classification: Athletic Trainer I

Anticipated Hiring Salary: $5,357/month (Step 10)

CSU Salary Range: $4,482/month – $6,530/month (Steps 1–20)

San José State University offers a comprehensive benefits package typically worth 30–35% of base salary.
