Job description

Overview

The assistant athletic trainer assists the head athletic trainer in the day-to-day operations of the athletic training room and sports medicine area, including prevention, evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and/or illnesses for student-athletes in an intercollegiate program. This is a full-time position reporting to the head athletic trainer and follows NCAA Division I, MAAC, Hockey East rules and Merrimack College policies.

Responsibilities
  • Work with designated teams and student-athletes to provide onsite care and management of injuries and illnesses, including clinical evaluation and diagnosis, immediate and emergency care, treatment, rehabilitation, and health and well-being support.
  • Assess risk of injury, perform ergonomic evaluation and coaching, support self-care, and promote overall wellness.
  • Think critically and independently about assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return-to-play decisions per state licensure guidelines.
  • Maintain written/electronic documentation of all athletic injuries/conditions, treatment, rehabilitation and progress notes, including physician referrals and insurance claims.
  • Communicate with physicians and coaches regarding student-athlete injuries and healthcare.
  • Provide medical care for assigned student-athletes per sports medicine standard operating procedures.
  • Collaborate with strength and conditioning staff on injuries, rehabilitation, treatment plans and programming for individuals.
  • Minimize injury risk through education and prevention strategies.
  • Represent Merrimack Athletics with professionalism and integrity.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to graduate fellows and student interns; teach skills and competencies to students in the graduate Athletic Training Education Program; serve as a preceptor.
  • Foster a culture committed to NCAA rules, MAAC, NEC and Hockey East protocols, and institutional policies.
  • Participate in departmental activities including staff meetings, compliance education, guest speaker presentations and other events/meetings.
  • Adhere to the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) Code of Ethics.
  • Fulfill other responsibilities related to the athletic training program as assigned.
Educational & Licensure Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • BOC Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).
  • Massachusetts State License – Athletic Training (Active or willingness to obtain).
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and intercollegiate athletics.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Applied knowledge of medical problems; ability to assess and work with other healthcare professionals.
  • Critical thinking and independent decision-making regarding assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and return-to-play per licensure guidelines.
  • Attention to detail in injury tracking and documentation.
  • Strong interpersonal communication in high-stress situations with patients, medical professionals, staff and families.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to travel with athletic teams to away contests as needed.
  • Ability to work day, evening, weekend, and holiday hours as necessary.
Experience
  • Collegiate athletic training experience is preferred.
  • Experience with high-impact and non-impact sports is preferred.
License Requirements
  • BOC Certified Athletic Trainer (ATC).
  • Massachusetts State License – Athletic Training.
