Department 00068 - Mechanical Engineering
City Salt Lake City, UT
New Position to Begin
New Position to Begin 01/01/2027
The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Utah (https://mech.utah.edu/) invites applications for one career line lecturing position with an anticipated start date in Fall 2027. In 2024, the department started an MS in Systems Engineering and a Masters of Engineering Management both on-campus and online. These programs are in high demand and there are already 100 students matriculated or graduated. To further emphasize the growth, the Fundamentals of Systems Engineering class in Fall 2026 has over 150 enrolled students.
The department is planning to offer the Fundamentals of Systems Engineering and the Systems Engineering and Integration courses every semester. Currently these classes are offered once a year and are rated in the top 15% of courses offered by the Price College of Engineering. The successful candidate must be able to teach both of these classes following INCOSE’s guidelines and at a high level of engagement with students. Furthermore, the faculty member will also need to offer these classes effectively to an online audience.
Depending upon service, outreach, and other activities, the faculty position is between a 2-2 and 3-3 teaching load per year. There is an option to offer a summer class for additional pay. Thus, the candidate should plan on developing a few quality courses in any Systems, Industrial and Management Engineering (SIME) field. Currently, the department only has 5 career line SIME faculty with an average duration of over 6 years at the U. It is important that the individual creates new classes not currently being offered. All courses in these SIME fields are open to be developed and offered. Some current needs are supply chain, logistics, reliability, quality control, information systems, inventory control, etc., but the exact classes are highly adaptable and selectable by the hired individual. The successful candidate will also be encouraged to propose new courses that reflect their own expertise, emerging technologies, evolving industry needs, and the continued growth of the SIME programs.
The SIME programs are growing so fast that there is currently a proposal to start a Doctor of Engineering in Systems Engineering and a Doctor of Engineering in Engineering Management. These programs are likely to pass, and the candidate will have an opportunity to advise applied doctoral research with students working in industry. The position has no formal research requirement, but as a tier 1 research institution, research is always encouraged.
Applicants shall have a terminal degree, Ph.D., Doctor of Engineering, or Sc.D. The successful applicant should have evidence of quality teaching and the ability to teach quality graduate classes both online and in person. Depending upon the candidates experience, candidates could be considered at the level of associate (Lecturer) or full professor (Lecturer).
