Job summary

Overview

Counseling In Schools (CIS) is a dynamic community-based organization founded in 1986 with a mission to promote the emotional and social growth of children so that they can thrive in school and succeed in life.

Counseling In Schools is currently seeking an Assistant Program Director to work as part of a team of professionals in a Bronx elementary school tasked with the goal of increasing family engagement and communication. The candidate filling this role will be responsible for conducting regular outreach to families including student attendance outreach, coordination and facilitation of workshops and meetings for families, assistance with school event and trip planning, assistance with identification of community resources available to families and more. The ideal candidate must be bilingual in Spanish and have experience working with NYC children and families.

Key Responsibilities

Family & Community Engagement

  • Build and maintain positive relationships with students, families, school staff, and community partners.
  • Serve as a bilingual liaison, providing oral and written communication with families in both English and Spanish.
  • Conduct regular outreach to families regarding attendance, academic progress, school engagement, after-school participation, and available community resources.
  • Develop and implement family engagement initiatives that strengthen school-home partnerships and promote student success.
  • Assist families in accessing community resources, social services, and educational supports.
Student Attendance & Student Support
  • Conduct attendance outreach through phone calls, emails, letters, text messages and home visit coordination as needed.
  • Support initiatives that improve student attendance, engagement, and overall school connectedness.
  • Assist with student mentoring, case management support, and follow-up services as assigned.
Program Administration & Data Management
  • Assist with the day-to-day management of 21CCLC after-school program.
  • Maintain accurate program documentation, attendance records, and participant information.
  • Perform timely and accurate data entry using program databases and student information systems to track enrollment, attendance, family engagement activities, and program outcomes.
  • Monitor inventories and assist with ordering program materials and supplies.
  • Support compliance with organizational, DOE, and funder requirements.
Workshop Facilitation & Event Planning
  • Coordinate and support school-wide events, workshops, family nights, resource fairs, field trips, and community engagement activities.
  • Lead and co-facilitate workshops and presentations in both English and Spanish.
  • Assist with event logistics, including scheduling, vendor and community partner communication, registration, room setup, volunteer coordination, transportation, refreshments, materials, incentives, and day-of-event operations.
  • Create promotional materials and conduct outreach to maximize participation and program enrollment.
Collaboration & Leadership
  • Work collaboratively with the Community School Director, school administration, teachers, counselors, and community partners.
  • Communicate regularly with families, staff, and stakeholders regarding program activities and services.
  • Assist with after-school program management and daily operations.
  • Support recruitment, enrollment, retention, and daily operations of the after-school program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Community School Director.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Social Work, Human Services, Public Administration, or a related field preferred.
  • Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish (spoken and written) is required.
  • Experience working in a school, after-school program, youth development, family engagement, or related educational setting preferred.
  • Experience planning and facilitating events.
  • Experience with data entry, database management preferred.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills.

Compensation

Salary Range: $50,000-$56,000; commensurate with experience
