Responsibilities

The Assistant Engineer supports the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of the casino vessel’s machinery, electrical distribution, life-safety systems, and related marine equipment. Working under the direction of the Engineer in Charge, this position assists with preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repairs, inspections, documentation, emergency response, and the coordination of engineering personnel and contractors. The Assistant Engineer helps maintain continuous utility service to the vessel while minimizing disruption to casino and hospitality operations.

  • Assist the Engineer in Charge with the daily operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of vessel machinery and supporting systems.
  • Monitor shore power, generators, electrical switchgear, pumps, motors, HVAC, plumbing, fuel, lubricating oil, bilge, sewage, fire protection, alarm, and related systems.
  • Help ensure generator sets and emergency equipment remain ready for automatic or manual operation during a power interruption or other casualty.
  • Conduct routine rounds of machinery spaces and other assigned areas; identify abnormal conditions and initiate or recommend corrective action.
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repairs in accordance with approved procedures, manufacturer guidance, and the vessel maintenance program.
  • Maintain accurate operating logs, inspection records, work orders, equipment histories, parts usage, and required regulatory documentation.
  • Promptly report equipment failures, safety hazards, environmental concerns, and regulatory deficiencies to the Engineer in Charge and other designated leaders.
  • Coordinate engineering work with the Captain of the Watch and affected operating departments to protect guests, team members, vessel systems, and business continuity.
  • Provide work direction and technical support to assigned watch engineers, technicians, contractors, and vendors; verify work is completed safely and satisfactorily.
  • Support inspections, surveys, audits, and testing conducted by applicable federal, state, local, gaming, fire-safety, and third-party authorities.
  • Assist with the safe transfer, storage, handling, and disposal of fuel, oil, sewage, chemicals, and other regulated materials.
  • Inspect and maintain fire, emergency, and lifesaving equipment within the position’s assigned scope.
  • Participate in emergency drills and fulfill assigned duties under the vessel’s emergency preparedness plan, station bill, and incident response procedures.
  • Maintain clean, orderly, secure, and hazard-free machinery and work spaces.
  • Follow lockout/tagout, confined-space, hot-work, fall-protection, personal protective equipment, environmental, and other established safety procedures.
  • Assist with parts and supply inventory, purchasing requests, contractor access, and project planning as assigned.
  • Deliver courteous, responsive service and complete work in a manner that minimizes impact on casino and hospitality operations.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; technical, maritime, electrical, mechanical, or industrial training preferred.
  • [Three] years of progressively responsible experience in marine engineering, vessel maintenance, power generation, industrial maintenance, or a closely related field preferred.
  • Experience aboard a casino vessel, passenger vessel, commercial vessel, military vessel, or comparable industrial facility preferred.
  • Working knowledge of diesel generators, electrical distribution, pumps, motors, controls, HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, and preventive maintenance practices.
  • Ability to read technical manuals, diagrams, schematics, operating procedures, and safety documents.
  • Ability to use computerized maintenance systems and standard office applications and to maintain complete, accurate records.
  • Must meet the minimum age requirement established by applicable gaming regulations.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain all required gaming, work, safety, and facility credentials.
  • Merchant Mariner Credential, Qualified Member of the Engine Department endorsement, Designated Duty Engineer endorsement, or other applicable marine credential preferred or required when specified by the vessel’s operating authority and Certificate of Inspection.
  • Current CPR, first aid, AED, and basic firefighting certifications preferred; must obtain designated certifications within the employer’s required timeframe.
  • Valid driver’s license may be required.
