Asset Recovery Analyst position with Union Tank Car Company (UTLX/PROX) / Marmon / Berkshire Hathaway

Overview

Position can be based in either Chicago or Oakville, Ontario with a hybrid schedule; some days in the corporate office, rest of week work from home. The Asset Recovery Analyst is responsible for recovering damage claims for UTLX and PROX-owned railcars, managing mileage activity reported by railroads, and overseeing the dismantling of rail assets. This role serves as a critical liaison among railroads, third-party vendors, repair shops, and internal teams. The position contributes to cost recovery and process optimization efforts, requiring the ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence stakeholders without direct authority, ensuring timely resolution of issues and alignment with key business objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Lead damage recovery efforts from railroads, managing over $15 million in annual counter-billing.
  • Serve as the primary owner of the Railinc DDCT incident process and main contact for internal and external stakeholders in railroad damage resolution.
  • Manage the end-of-life asset dismantling process, overseeing projects valued at over $10 million annually.
  • Analyze and report on excess mileage and equalization estimates, identifying trends and cost drivers.
  • Advise lessees and customer-facing teams on mileage disputes, damage claims, and scrap car status.
  • Lead process and vendor optimization initiatives to reduce costs and improve operational efficiency.
  • Prepare and deliver data-driven reports and insights to support strategic decision-making.
  • Audit, dispute, and resolve railroad freight billing discrepancies.

  • Experience with analytics tools (PowerBI, Tableau, SAP).
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in transportation, asset management, or related operational analytics roles.
