About the Department

The North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies ( NCICS ) is a UNC inter-institutional research institute whose primary focus is to promote the discovery of new knowledge about global, regional, and local climate variability and its impacts; and to provide information that is critical for determining trends and validating climate forecasts at all these spatial scales. A primary activity of NCICS is the operation of the NOAA Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth Systems Science ( CISESS ) formed through a consortium of academic, non-profit, and community organizations with leadership from the University of Maryland, College Park ( UMCP ) and North Carolina State University ( NCSU ) on behalf of the University of North Carolina ( UNC ) System. CISESS provides foci for collaborative research and associated activities in support of NOAA mission goals related to meteorological satellite and climate data and information research and development.

The North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies ( NCICS ) is seeking an Assessments Editor and Production Coordinator to help coordinate the editorial, figure development, and production tasks of the Assessments Technical Support Unit ( TSU ) at NCICS . This person will work closely with the Assessment Production Manager, the Scientific Graphics Quality Coordinator, and editorial, science, and visual communications staff at the TSU to support of the development and publication of scientific assessment reports and associated communications products, the NCICS State Climate Summaries, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change ( IPCC ) Working Group III contribution to the Seventh Assessment Report, and an assessment of nature and its benefits to the United States.

This person will use project management and communication skills and tools to coordinate and track the development of report chapters and hundreds of scientific figures and infographics across multiple TSU teams, external author teams, and other partners. They will also provide editorial support for assessment reports and other NCICS communications products. The Assessments Editor and Production Coordinator will be responsible for:


Project Management:

  • Use project management expertise and tools (e.g., Monday.com and various in-house tools) to define processes, prioritize tasks, and monitor status.
  • Use multiple communications tools and channels to effectively and efficiently convey project information, including awareness of pending tasks, deadlines, obstacles, and risks.
  • Coordinate efforts across multiple teams to create, revise, and deliver high-quality, useful, and accessible scientific data visualizations and infographics.
  • Coordinate editorial review and approval processes involving large author teams, editors at the TSU , and other external partners.
  • Manage copyright permissions processes to ensure all necessary permissions are received prior to publication.
  • Provide project management support to lead scientists, external Assessment scientists and management personnel as needed and/or requested.
  • Liaise and coordinate with the science team to ensure that the algorithms, procedures, mathematics, and statistical techniques used to create the foundational science underlying Assessment products are described in clear, cohesive, and accessible language.
  • Implement and refine feedback loops to capture input from stakeholders and subject matter experts efficiently, ensuring revisions are tracked and addressed systematically.
  • Report regularly on project metrics, including task completion rates, status changes, and resource allocations to leadership as needed and/or requested.
  • Independently manage timelines, resources, and staff in management of assessment projects.
  • Assume a leadership role in coordinating with program managers on special editorial projects.
  • Assume a leadership role in the creation and maintenance of editorial and graphics style guides unique to each assessment product.

Editorial Support:
  • Develop templates (e.g., Word and Google documents) for use by authors.
  • Contribute to development and maintenance of internal style guides and external guidance documents for authors and editors.
  • Copyedit and proofread content through all stages of development, including final quality control of web, PDF , and print products.
  • Write alternative text descriptions for complex scientific figures.
  • Work with the editorial team to provide science communications support for Institute staff and projects.
  • Contribute to scientific figures and infographics across multiple TSU teams, external author teams, and other partners.
  • Participate in creating and executing production schedules for assessment reports and other products under strict deadlines.

Communication:
  • Collaboratively participate as a member of a nationally distributed project team to effectively communicate essential, scientific information through the development and production of scientific government report materials (in print, digital, and web formats).
  • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with pertinent federal agency (civil servants and contractors) and other organization/institution (authors, scientists, etc.) employees in support of the Climate Assessment Program.
  • Present findings and accomplishments of the Assessment Editorial Team at scientific and professional meetings, as well as at engagement activities with the public, both in person and remotely.
  • Assimilate and communicate essential information to the editorial team, program management, and other constituents.
  • Fully participate in unit ( NCICS , Assessment, TSU , etc.) activities and meetings.
Other Responsibilities
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in English, journalism, or related area of study.
  • At least five years of experience editing books, large reports, or other complex communications products
  • At least five years of experience coordinating or managing the development and production of books, large reports, or other complex communications products
Other Required Qualifications
  • Exceptional editing, writing, and proofreading skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Extensive experience coordinating activities across multi-disciplinary teams
  • Extensive experience with coordinating the development of complex scientific figures and infographics
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and prioritize activities across a team or multiple teams to deliver content on time and with challenging deadlines
  • Extensive experience with cloud-based project management software and communications tools
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the Monday.com project management tool
  • Ten years of experience coordinating the development and delivery of complex communications products (books, large reports, etc.)
  • Experience working on Federally funded and/or international climate assessment reports or other scientific assessments
