Position SummaryUnder the general direction of the Director of InstitutionalResearch and Assessment, the Assistant Director of InstitutionalAssessment will continue work with a comprehensive college-wideassessment strategy in alignment with Hood College’s mission andMiddle States Reaccreditation requirements. This position isresponsible for coordinating all aspects of designing,implementing, completing, and preparing assessment reportsdeveloped in collaboration with the faculty, department chairs,program directors, Dean of Graduate School, and the Provost tostudy student learning outcomes at the course, program andinstitutional level. The Assistant Director is responsible forcollaborating with administrative department managers for reportingon administrative effectiveness at the departmental level. TheAssistant Director also will train faculty and administrators onbest practices in assessment programs and how to implementstrategies to improve student learning outcomes and organizationaleffectiveness.
Essential Duties include the following. Other duties may beassigned.
Education Program and Student Outcomes Assessment (60%)- Collaborate with faculty, department chairs, program directors,Dean of Graduate School, and the Provost to coordinate all aspectsof designing, completing, and preparing assessment reports to studystudent learning outcomes at the course, program and institutionallevel.
- Serve as a member of the Core Oversight Board (COB) and assistwith assessment of the core curriculum.
- Schedule regular meetings with (core area) assessmentcoordinators to ensure appropriate level of progress is being madethroughout the assessment cycle.
- Respond to faculty assessment needs and requests, particularlyfor programmatic review and accreditation.
- Perform complex data analysis and interpret a variety ofoutcome measures and trend data.
- Draft reports on findings and work with faculty to ensure theinformation is used.
- Analyze quantitative and qualitative data and assist in thepreparation of spread sheets, charts and tables for publication andpresentation.
- Conduct research on topics as designated; assemble anddistribute reports and information to the College community.
- Maintain an appropriate IR assessment calendar and publish itto the campus community for evaluating student learning outcomesand program effectiveness.
- Maintain detailed records of assessment activities, analysisand Update the Assessment of Student Learning Manual asneeded.
- Serve as an ex-officio member on Curriculum Committee andGraduate Council.
Manage the assessment and course evaluation Systems (20%)- Manage the system for assessment of student learning outcomes(currently Anthology Portfolio), to include rubric design, set up,results analysis, and reporting.
- Manage the course evaluation system.
- Provide technical support for instructors and students.
- Update training materials as needed.
Institutional Effectiveness (10%)- Use best practices for institutional effectiveness to promoteadministrative assessment and provide feedback to be used incontinuous improvement process.
- Manage the annual administrative assessment data collection andprepare reports for Planning, Budgeting, and Assessment Committee(PBAC).
- Assist administrators in developing annual goals fordepartmental program assessment that connect with the currentstrategic priorities and annual business objectives.
- Monitor annual goals and assist with implementation ofcontinuous improvement processes.
- Maintain detailed records of institutional effectivenessactivities and reporting.
Faculty and Administrator Development (10%)- Use knowledge of best practices in assessment to provideongoing training for academic and administrative programsconcerning all aspects of assessment through workshops orindividual training sessions.

Education and/or Experience MinimumRequirements/QualificationsMaster’s degree and experience in educational and/or socialresearch or related field required or equivalent combination ofeducation and experience. Experience working with educationalassessment and institutional effectiveness in higher education isrequired. Familiarity with the various laws that affect highereducation is required (HEOA, FERPA, Title IV and Title IX of theEducational Amendments Act of 1965, Section 505 of theRehabilitation Act, etc.).
Technology SkillsProficient in MS Office tools (Microsoft Word, Excel, andPowerPoint), e-mail and Internet. Ability to learn new applicationsquickly including organization-wide information systems anddepartment-specific software applications. Experience withassessment and statistical software is desired.
Language SkillsAbility to effectively present information and positively respondto questions from groups of students, faculty, administrators,staff and the general public both in person and virtually.Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general businessperiodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, orgovernmental regulations. Ability to write reports, businesscorrespondence, and procedure manuals. Strong public speakingskills and teaching or training experience is required.
Mathematical SkillsStrong statistical and analytical skills required. Ability to workwith and apply statistical and mathematical concepts timely andaccurately, either manually, by using a calculator, or aspreadsheet package (such as Excel); demonstrated knowledge ofassessment including research design, data collection, dataanalysis, and reporting; and experience working with a variety ofdatabases; and the use of computer applications to manipulate andanalyze data is required.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to interpret a variety of complex policies and proceduresto resolve problems and make decisions. Ability to solve practicalproblems and deal with a variety of concrete variables insituations where only limited standardization exists. Ability tointerpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral,diagram, or schedule form. Ability to hypothesize, drawconclusions, and support conclusions. Ability to work intheoretical arena and apply logic as appropriate. Ability to useappropriate statistical inference skills.
Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of thosethat must be met by an employee to successfully perform theessential functions of this job. While performing the duties ofthis job, the employee is frequently required to sit; occasionallystand and walk, use fingers, hands, reach with hands and arms, andtalk and hear. The employee may occasionally be required to standand lift and move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilitiesrequired by this job include close vision.
Work EnvironmentThe work environment described here is representative of what anemployee will encounter while performing the essential functions ofthis job. The noise level in the work environment is usuallymoderate and could include interaction with other staff, students,and the public, telephones and office equipment. The AssistantDirector of Institutional Assessment may be required to meet withfaculty and administrator groups at campus locations other than theOIRA office suite and may need to meet with these individualsoutside of normal core business hours.
CompensationThis is a position with an annual starting salary range of $58,000- $65,000 depending on circumstances including an applicant’sskills and qualifications, certain degrees and certifications,prior job experience, training, and other relevant factors. HoodCollege has provided a compensation range representing its goodfaith estimate of what the College may pay for the position at thetime of posting.
