Job description

Overview

Veeco’s Somerset manufacturing team builds advanced semiconductor process equipment where build quality, precision, and repeatability directly affect customer performance. This Assembler role supports growing production demands by adding experienced builders who already know how to execute complex tool builds by following detailed build documentation with minimal guidance. You will build and verify complex tooling, fixtures, and process equipment that directly support Veeco’s deposition, laser, and advanced packaging platforms. Your work ensures that critical systems leave the facility ready for integration, test, and customer delivery. You will own assemblies from component pick through final inspection, contributing technical expertise and coordinating with your team to get every build done right, efficiently, and to spec.

Responsibilities
  • Build complex mechanical and electromechanical assemblies and subassemblies that meet documented specifications, tolerances, and quality requirements.
  • Interpret blueprints, schematics, process instructions, and visual work aids to assemble accurate, repeatable assemblies and subassemblies.
  • Own the tool build lifecycle from material pick through final assembly, with a thorough understanding of all build stages required to take a tool from the ground up, identifying what needs to happen, in what order, and what resources are needed to complete the build on schedule.
  • Coordinate effectively with team members on shared builds, delegating tasks logically based on skill, sequence, and workload to maintain efficiency and build quality.
  • Work with calibrated tools, including torque wrenches, using correct torque values and identifying expired calibration dates for recertification.
  • Measure parts to determine tolerances using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, and verniers.
  • Drill, tap, ream, countersink, and spot‑face bolt holes in parts using drill presses and portable power drills; file, lap, and buff parts to fit using hand and power tools.
  • Route, cut, crimp, and terminate cables and wiring according to documented standards and build instructions.
  • Install and identify plumbing and gas lines in compliance with approved procedures and safety requirements.
  • Disassemble units to replace parts or to crate them for shipping.
  • Identify non‑conforming parts, document issues, and partner with quality teams to resolve discrepancies before shipment.
  • Safely lift and position large components using hoists and material handling equipment in compliance with safety protocols.
  • Diagnose assembly issues and take corrective action to maintain build schedules and quality standards.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required, with at least 2 years of hands‑on experience assembling mechanical or electromechanical equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret assembly documentation, electrical schematics, and plumbing diagrams.
  • Hands‑on experience using calibrated tools, such as torque wrenches.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull up to 40 pounds.
  • Flexibility to work overtime as business needs require.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Proven ability to execute complex tool builds from start to finish, with a working knowledge of build sequencing, part dependencies, and how to coordinate team members to complete the work efficiently.
  • Strong quality mindset with the ability to recognize workmanship issues and stop work when standards are not met.
  • Proficient with hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, and calibrated torque wrenches.
  • Skilled at troubleshooting mechanical or assembly issues using logical, structured problem‑solving.
  • Experience using ERP systems for work orders or material tracking; SAP preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word in a manufacturing setting.
  • Working knowledge of clean room environments and gowning procedures is ideal.
  • Experience safely lifting and positioning components over 40 pounds using hoists and lifting aids preferred.
  • Background in regulated industries such as medical device, semiconductor, or FDA‑regulated manufacturing is a plus.
