Job summary

Inwood Academy for Leadership is seeking a 26-27 Middle School Science Teacher Apprentice in New York, NY. The role is a one-year apprenticeship with potential renewal, involving co-teaching, tutoring, grading, and gradual responsibility growth within a charter school setting.

You will participate in professional development, work with an instructional coach, and aim to become a regular classroom teacher within 1–2 years. Compensation includes standard benefits and a competitive package.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in specific subject matter or education preferred.
• Enrollment in a Bachelor's program with a major or minor in Education with a minimum of 60 credits is required.
• Some teaching or tutoring experience is preferred.
• Experience supporting teachers through coaching or directing.
• Experience working with students with diverse backgrounds and needs
• Experience and general understanding of educational administration

Responsibilities

• Teach classes on behalf of Deans and teacher-leaders who are observing other teachers
• Provide substitute teaching coverage for teachers within the school
• Teach one class or small groups of students
• Periodically plan and deliver instruction, gradually taking on more responsibility throughout the year
• Develop teaching skills to potentially become a full-time teacher at the school
• Support students by providing one-on-one and small group tutoring daily, and small group intervention and student support
• Observe teachers in order to improve instructional techniques and classroom management
• Meet regularly with a coach to implement feedback on lessons and instruction
• Teach or help coordinate an elective class
• Build effective relationships amongst teachers, parents, and the community to improve school culture
• Foster a school climate that supports the school’s mission statement; promote respect and appreciation for all students, staff and parents
