The Maintenance of Traffic Laborer performs various duties involving traffic control to assist the crew when paving roads and highways, directing motorists and flagging traffic as needed under the direction of the traffic control foreman.

Minimum Requirements:

• Stand for periods of time and flag traffic to direct motorists through the construction work zone. Use of a STOP/SLOW paddle or orange flag is required.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

• Set up and maintain traffic control devices based on the specific demands of the traffic control plan for the job.
• Walk beside slow-moving equipment and flag traffic using a handheld flag.
• Flag traffic while standing, using both hands for a STOP/SLOW paddle and a two-way radio. May be exposed to weather extremes (i.e., heat, rain, wind, etc.)
• Monitor lane closures for knocked over cones and upright or move cones as needed.
• Monitor lane closures for knocked over barricades or portable signs and upright these items (weight 10-20 lbs). Requires walking, bending, and lifting.
• Placement or removal of plastic traffic cones (weight 10-12 lbs) while sitting in a slow-moving vehicle.
• Placement or removal of barricades/signs (weight 25-50 lbs) from the back of a pick-up truck or trailer.
• Climb into or out of the back of a pick-up truck or traffic control trailer.
• Check with dump truck operators who come on-site to receive a copy of the load ticket and provide directions to dump areas.

Traffic control or Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) involves a variety of duties and responsibilities. Many tasks can stand alone and be performed for a 10-hour shift. Various combinations of these tasks can be performed or eliminated based on the physical limitations of the employee, if any. All requirements are subject to modification to reasonably accommodate individuals with a disability.
