Job Description

Under supervision, the Asphalt Finisher spreads, rakes, and finishes asphalt mixtures in connection with street maintenance and repair projects. Responsibilities include: operating an asphalt kettle and tool heater; assisting with job site clean‑up after asphalt repairs; setting up job sites in a safe manner; and performing related duties as required.

The essential functions and duties of the position include:

• Spreads and rakes asphaltic mixtures
• Irons asphalt to obtain a compact and smooth surface.
• Clean cut‑outs and prepare sub‑grades before paving
• Assist in clean‑up of job site after asphaltic repairs
• Set up job site (including cones, barricades, high‑risers and signs) in a safe manner
• Complete standard job reports
• May operate the screed on an asphalt paver
• Will be the grounds person on asphalt milling machine
• May operate asphalt kettle and tool heater
• Experience: Two (2) years of verifiable experience in street paving and repair work as an asphalt worker.
• License and Certification: Possession of a valid California Driver's License

Desirable Qualifications

Experience serving as a grounds person on high‑production road milling or asphalt grinding machinery.

Experience operating heavy asphalt paving equipment (e.g., Caterpillar, Volvo, etc.) on large‑scale commercial or civil projects.

TSA Security Clearance: Candidates for employment are required to undergo a criminal history record check, including FBI fingerprints and Security Threat Assessment, and may be required to undergo drug/alcohol screening. Per Civil Service Commission Rule Section 110.9.1, applicants must possess and maintain the qualifications required by law and the announcement. Failure to obtain and maintain security clearance may result in termination.

Customs Clearance: The incumbent must be qualified for unescorted access to the San Francisco International Airport U.S. Customs Security Area and must submit an application for, successfully acquire, and maintain a Customs Access Seal. Failure to maintain customs access may result in termination.

Medical Examination: Prior to appointment, candidates must successfully pass a medical examination to determine the ability to perform the essential functions of the job and meet the physical minimum requirements.
