Job summary

The City of Portland’s Portland Bureau of Transportation is seeking an Asphalt Raker to perform repairs on city streets and operate screed control on paving equipment. You will set up traffic safety devices, dump asphalt, rake to grade, and assist the Crew Lead to determine mix needs while maintaining clear communication with the public.

Ideal candidates will have experience with asphalt raking tools, raking hot mix, and basic math for area calculations.

Qualifications

• Experience using asphalt raking tools and equipment.
• Experience raking hot mix.
• Ability to judge the amount of hot mix needed and rake to grade.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical computations to determine area and volume.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor for long periods of time.

• Spread tack coat
• Utilize strong communication techniques to answer questions from the public

The incumbent is an essential employee and a member of the bureau's 24-hour response team and may require after-hour, evening, weekend, and holiday emergency response.

Position Summary

During emergencies and the non-paving season, Asphalt Rakers perform various duties as requires, usually described in the job duties section of the Utility Worker class specifications located at: https://www.portland.gov/bhr/class-comp/documents/utility-worker-series-cl/download Persons occupying these positions are required to drive City vehicles.

Wage Information:

• Entry: $32.13 per hour
• After six months: $33.34 per hour
• After 1 year: $37.30 per hour
• After 2 years: $38.66 per hour

1. Experience utilizing asphalt raking tools and equipment.
2. Experience raking hot mix.
3. Ability to accurately judge the amount of hot mix needed for a project and rake to required grade prior to rolling or compacting.
4. Ability to perform basic mathematical computations to determine area and volume.
5. Ability to perform heavy manual labor for long periods of time.

Applicants must also:

• Possess a valid state driver's license and acceptable driving record at the time of hire.

• Submit a "complete" five-year court-certified Driver's Abstract of Driving Record (obtained at applicant's expense) upon offer.
• Take and pass a Pre-Placement medical exam upon offer.

Incumbent is typically required to negotiate rough terrain; lift heavy objects; work outdoors in all weather conditions; may be called back to work during emergencies; work in and around traffic, work site equipment or machinery; work at heights or in confined spaces; exposed to hazardous materials; wear protective gear.
