Job summary

The Chimes School in Baltimore, MD seeks a Language Acquisition Specialist/Communication Specialist / Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI) to provide individualized communication and educational support to a student with specialized needs.

Proficiency in ASL and tactile ASL is required, with ability to adapt communication and instructional approaches. You will collaborate with teachers and the IEP team to promote student participation and independence.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• ASL proficiency required.
• Ability to communicate using tactile ASL required.
• Experience supporting Deaf, hard of hearing, or DeafBlind individuals.
• Ability to adapt communication methods to meet individualized needs.
• Strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to work with a multidisciplinary educational team.
• Willingness to assist with student personal care and mobility needs.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate communication between student, teachers, peers, and staff using ASL, tactile ASL, and ProTactile techniques.
• Interpret classroom instruction and activities to ensure meaningful participation.
• Collaborate with teachers and IEP team to support goals.
• Adapt instructional materials and activities to meet needs.
• Develop or modify instructional materials and assistive tech resources.
• Provide individualized support during instruction and activities.
• Assist with personal care needs as required.
• Communicate with home and participate in IEP meetings when requested.
• Assist with assessments, progress monitoring, and data collection.
• Maintain MSDE regulatory compliance and school policies.
• Collaborate with educators and therapists to promote independence.
