Day in the Life of Ambulatory Surgery Operating Room RN

Responsible for performing duties related to direct patient care. The Operating Room RN will assess, monitor, and provide professional nursing services for patients of assigned physician(s) following established nursing practice standards. The role will be responsible for providing professional nursing support in the ambulatory surgery center by assisting physicians with procedures, patient assessment, transfers, and patient education.

Essential Functions:

• Utilizes the nursing process and effective written and verbal communications skills in the provision of safe, effective, high quality nursing services to patient populations. Assists physician in performance of procedures through implementation of the perioperative process.
• Assumes responsibility for intra‑operative patient safety by acting as the nursing advocate for the patient by; appropriate positioning, confirming the procedure and site, actively participating in the time out, informs surgeon, anesthesiologist and operating room team of any issues or concerns.
• Monitors sterile and aseptic techniques in all areas of the perioperative process. Performs all circulating duties with efficiency and speed. Performs scrub duties, as necessary. Assists in the: set up and clean‑up of the operating room, opening of sterile packs, instruments, and supplies.

Minimum Requirements:

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing
• Current RN license to practice nursing in the State of Iowa.
• Certificate in Basic Cardiac Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Mandatory Reporter Certification
• Two years nursing experience in an acute care hospital setting required, specialty‑specific.
• Ambulatory surgery experience is preferred.
