Job summary

Cumming Group in Los Angeles, CA is seeking an Asbestos Abatement Coordinator to support LAUSD projects in K-12 schools. You will conduct surveys, sampling and prepare assessment reports and abatement design, with the actual removal performed by a specialized contractor.

Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field, at least five years of relevant construction environmental experience, and mandatory AHERA, EPA Lead Renovation, and CA certifications (CSST/CAS).

  • Reviews environmental Phase 1–3 reports for accuracy and completeness.
  • Surveys sites to recommend abatement methods for asbestos and lead materials.
  • Plans repair, removal, disposal or encapsulation of asbestos materials and lead-based paint.

This position will support asbestos abatement activities for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) in K-12 public schools and is an excellent opportunity to be part of one of the largest school bond programs in the country. The actual removal of asbestos will be done by a specialized contractor. This position will be involved in conducting surveys, sampling, preparing assessment reports, and abatement design only.Essential Duties & Responsibilities:Maintains open communication with central and regional existing departments in Facilities (Maintenance & Operations, Project Execution, and Central Design Management Group) to provide technical support related to asbestos and lead issues.Prepares site assessment (Phase 1), abatement design (Phase 2) to address the impact of asbestos and lead-containing materials on construction projects.Reviews environmental consultants’ Phase 1, 2, and 3 (project monitoring) reports for accuracy.Surveys sites to recommend the best method to mitigate the abatement of asbestos and lead containing building materials.Prepares job estimates for project assessment, design and monitoring.Prepares reports describing inspection findings or results and impact to projects determined by review of construction drawings.Plans the repair, removal, disposal or encapsulation of asbestos-containing building materials, and abatement or in-place management of lead-based paint on structures and mechanical systems.Conducts environmental project monitoring during construction to ensure compliance with applicable laws, project specifications, safety regulations and established work practices.Investigates accidents or incidents that occur on or near the school grounds during the asbestos/lead related projects.Performs asbestos bulk sampling and lead wipe or paint chip sampling to investigate asbestos release or elevated lead exposure to children.Reviews condition assessment reports of asbestos-containing building materials (ACBM), address damaged/friable ACBM and manage the processing of asbestos bulk sampling data and abatement records.Update projects’ tracking sheets for progress status.Use Maximo to plan and track job progress and report actual labor charges.Knowledge & Skills Required:Utilize effective written and oral communication skills.Ability to communicate with various stakeholders, internal and external to the company.Demonstrate an understanding of how project documentation impacts the project flow.Ability to read blueprints.Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work efficiently.Demonstrate sound judgement and logical decision making skills.Understand how your role contributes to the organization's goals.Deliver quality work product by role modeling organizational core values.Hold self accountable to individual and team goals.Consistently communicate and collaborate with team members and clients.Build relationships with peers, leaders, and clients.Proactively participate in self-development to continually enhance current skills and build new skills required to excel at current role and prepare for career progression.Ability to perform at high levels in a fast paced, ever-changing work environment.Rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.Required Education and Experience:Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering or any related field. Candidates without the required degree must have additional years of experience to compensate for education on a year-for-year basis.A minimum of five (5) years full time paid professional construction experience on projects involving environmental (lead/asbestos) assessment, sampling, design, monitoring, and abatement; OR two (2) years of relevant experience plus a Certification from the State of CA as a Certified Site Surveillance Technician (CSST); OR certification from the State of CA as a Certified Asbestos Consultant (CAS).Additional Mandatory certifications include: Possession of Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), asbestos course certificates (Building Inspector, Management Planner, Contractor/Supervisor and Project Designer); Possession of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting(RRP) Certification; Possession of CA Department of Health (CDPH) Lead certification (Inspector/Assessor/Project Monitor).#LI-NH1Cumming Group is committed to providing Equal Employment Opportunity in its personnel policies and practices.
