Job summary

CMP Services is seeking an Asbestos Abatement Coordinator to support LAUSD in Los Angeles. The role oversees asbestos and lead assessment, sampling, abatement design, and project monitoring, coordinating with Facilities teams to support school renovation and construction projects.

The ideal candidate has CA certifications (AHERA, EPA RRP, CDPH Lead), strong reporting skills, and experience using Maximo for tracking. Bachelor's degree in engineering or related field is required.

Qualifications

  • Five or more years of full-time construction experience involving environmental (asbestos/lead) assessment, sampling, design, monitoring, and abatement.
  • Alternate: 2 years of full-time exposure plus a CA CSST or CA Certified Asbestos Consultant certification.
  • Possession of AHERA certificates (Inspector, Management Planner, Contractor/Supervisor, Project Designer) and EPA Lead RRP certification; CDPH Lead certification.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain open communication with Facilities teams to provide technical support on asbestos and lead issues.
  • Prepare Phase 1 site assessment and Phase 2 abatement design for construction projects.
  • Review Phase 1–3 reports for accuracy and monitor project progress.
  • Survey sites to determine best abatement methods for asbestos/lead materials.
  • Prepare job estimates and reports on inspection findings and project impact.
  • Plan repair, removal, disposal, encapsulation, or in-place management of asbestos/lead materials.
  • Conduct environmental monitoring to ensure regulatory compliance and safety.
  • Investigate accidents or incidents related to asbestos/lead work on school grounds.
  • Perform asbestos bulk sampling and lead wipe/paint chip sampling as needed.
  • Update project tracking sheets and use Maximo to track progress and labor charges.

Job description

CMP Services is seeking an Asbestos Abatement Coordinator to support our team at Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD).

This role is responsible for asbestos and lead assessment, sampling, abatement design, project monitoring, regulatory compliance, and coordination with Facilities teams to support school renovation and new construction projects. The ideal candidate will have experience in environmental hazard management, asbestos and lead abatement oversight, and applicable California certifications. Candidates should possess strong technical, reporting, and project tracking skills, with experience using systems such as Maximo preferred.

Duties:
  • Maintains open communication with central and regional existing departments in Facilities (Maintenance & Operations, Project Execution, and Central Design Management Group) to provide technical support related to asbestos and lead issues
  • Prepares site assessment (Phase 1), abatement design (Phase 2) to address the impact of asbestos and lead-containing materials on construction projects
  • Reviews environmental consultants' Phase 1, 2, and 3 (project monitoring) reports for accuracy
  • Surveys sites to recommend the best method to mitigate the abatement of asbestos and lead containing building materials
  • Prepares job estimates for project assessment, design and monitoring
  • Prepares reports describing inspection findings or results and impact to projects determined by review of construction drawings
  • Plans the repair, removal, disposal or encapsulation of asbestos-containing building materials, and abatement or in-place management of lead-based paint on structures and mechanical systems
  • Conducts environmental project monitoring during construction to ensure compliance with applicable laws, project specifications, safety regulations and established work practices
  • Investigates accidents or incidents that occur on or near the school grounds during the asbestos/lead related projects
  • Performs asbestos bulk sampling and lead wipe or paint chip sampling to investigate asbestos release or elevated lead exposure to children
  • Reviews condition assessment reports of asbestos-containing building materials (ACBM), address damaged/friable ACBM and manage the processing of asbestos bulk sampling data and abatement records
  • Update projects' tracking sheets for progress status
  • Use Maximo to plan and track job progress and report actual labor charges
Required Experience:
  • Five (5) years full time paid professional construction experience on projects involving environmental (asbestos/lead) assessment, sampling, design, monitoring and abatement
OR
  • 2 years full time paid professional construction experience on projects involving environmental (asbestos/lead) assessment, sampling, design, monitoring, and abatement PLUS a Certification from the State of CA as Certified Site Surveillance Technician (CSST)
OR
  • Certification from the State of CA as Certified Asbestos Consultant
Required Certificates:
  • Possession of Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA), asbestos course certificates (Building Inspector, Management Planner, Contractor/Supervisor and Project Designer)
  • Possession of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Lead Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Certification
  • Possession of CA Department of Health (CDPH) Lead certification (Inspector/Assessor/Project Monitor)
Required Education:
  • Graduation from a recognized college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering or any related field
OR
  • Candidates without a degree must have additional years of experience to compensate for education on a year-for-year basis
