Job Summary And Responsibilities
Acentra Health is looking for a Artificial Intelligence Specialist to join our growing team.
Job Summary
This position functions as a technical authority in applied machine learning and generative AI, leading complex, high-impact initiatives across the enterprise. The Specialist is responsible for designing and deploying advanced ML and GenAI solutions, particularly in large language models (LLMs) and natural language processing (NLP), to improve patient outcomes, inform product strategy, and shape the future of AI in healthcare. This role combines expert-level engineering with research and strategic foresight and plays a key role in developing technical roadmaps, setting best practices, and guiding investment decisions in AI/ML capabilities.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and implement advanced ML models and algorithms to solve complex, high-impact healthcare problems such as disease prediction, patient risk stratification, clinical decision support, and personalized medicine.
- Explore, evaluate, and deploy state-of-the-art ML techniques—including supervised and unsupervised learning, deep learning, and NLP—tailored for healthcare applications and large-scale operational contexts.
- Develop and refine robust data preprocessing workflows, including advanced data cleaning, feature engineering, and augmentation techniques to ensure scalability and model generalizability across diverse populations and datasets.
- Evaluate and validate ML models using rigorous metrics and stress-testing methodologies to ensure performance, accuracy, fairness, and reliability in real-world production environments.
- Interpret and communicate complex model outputs to technical and non-technical stakeholders, shaping clinical and operational decision-making with clear, actionable insights.
- Optimize and scale models for deployment in real-time and batch inference systems, balancing computational efficiency, cost, and compliance with healthcare regulations (e.g., HIPAA, FDA guidelines).
- Design, build, and deploy innovative LLM- and GenAI-based solutions to address business and clinical challenges, including intelligent automation, document summarization, and clinical language understanding.
- Architect and lead the development of CICD and MLOps pipelines to support scalable, secure, and compliant ML/AI product lifecycles across the enterprise.
- Establish and document best practices, reproducible workflows, and governance frameworks to ensure technical rigor, auditability, and cross-team knowledge sharing.
- Serve as a technical mentor and coach for engineering and data science teams, helping build internal capabilities and advance organizational understanding of ML/AI tools and methods.
- Collaborate with senior leadership, product owners, clinicians, and other functional teams to shape enterprise ML strategy and align technical solutions with long-term goals.
- Identify and drive high-impact innovation opportunities, leading proof-of-concept initiatives and evaluating emerging technologies for applicability within healthcare and AI strategy.
- Represent the AI/ML function internally and externally, contributing to internal thought leadership and staying engaged in the broader AI community through publications, conferences, or industry groups.
- Read, understand, and adhere to all corporate policies including policies related to HIPAA and its Privacy and Security Rules.
The list of accountabilities is not intended to be all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other education- and experience-related duties that management may deem necessary from time to time.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Advance degree in science or engineering field, combined with at least 6 years of experience in software engineering (master’s degree required; PhD preferred)
- 6+ years of experience as a ML Engineer
- 6+ years of experience with object-oriented scripting languages, such as Python or R
- 6+ years of experience with developing ML models
- 6+ years of experience with data preprocessing and feature engineering
- 3+ years of experience with LLMs and GenAI
- 3+ years of cloud computing experience using Azure, Amazon Web Services (AWS), or Google Cloud for testing, deploying, and managing ML and AI systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Recognized internally and externally as a subject-matter expert in ML, GenAI, and/or NLP
- Proven track record of innovation, including patents, publications, or major contributions to open-source projects or AI/ML communities
- Advanced understanding of the ML lifecycle, including data strategy, model monitoring, and governance in production environments
- Experience influencing product roadmaps, leading cross-functional initiatives, and advising executive leadership
- Deep experience with healthcare-specific applications, including working with clinical datasets and healthcare data standards (FHIR, HL7, DICOM)
- Proficiency in using data manipulation and analysis tools, such as SQL, Pandas, and NumPy
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams
