Position Title

Art Teacher (High School)

Summary

To provide an approved education program and establish a class environment that fosters learning and personal growth. To develop students' interest, abilities, talents and skills for artistic expression and creativity in the visual arts, as well as aesthetic understanding and appreciation by implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; developing lesson plans; modeling the necessary skills to performing assigned tasks; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• New Jersey Standard Teaching Certification (CE, CEAS) with subject matter specialization: Art.
• Valid New Jersey Instructional Certificate and Subject Area Endorsement or eligibility.
• Demonstrated knowledge of subject specialty and effective teaching methods.
• Ability to maintain a positive learning environment.
• Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
• Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
• Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.

• Prior to employment, complete a criminal history background check to prove that the individual has not been convicted of a crime or disorderly person's offense in accordance with N.J.S.A 18A:6-7.1.
• Provide evidence that health is adequate to fulfill the job functions and responsibilities with reasonable accommodation pursuant to 42 U.S.C. 12101 and in accordance with N.J.A.C. 6A:32-6.2.
• Pass the state required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test as required by N.J.A.C. 6A:32-6.3.

Key Responsibilities

• Works to achieve state core curriculum content standards and charter school educational goals and objectives by promoting active learning and skills development in the classroom. Teaches pupils through an approved course of study using board‑adopted curricula, textbooks and other appropriate teaching materials.
• Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides opportunities for individualized and small‑group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil.
• Sets specific objectives wherever possible in lesson preparation and weekly lesson plans and carries through presentation to effectively achieve these objectives.
• Assesses pupil academic progress and personal growth toward stated objectives of instruction.
• Maintains records of pupil's educational progress in class record books and/or board approved forms and summarizes these marks for reporting purposes.
• Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and resolving learning problems.
• Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a classroom climate conducive to learning.
• Budgets class time effectively.
• Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to inform them about the school program and to discuss pupil progress.
• Devises written and oral assignments and tests that require analytical and critical thinking as well as the reproduction of facts.
• Supervises pupils in out‑of‑classroom activities as assigned.
• Works with students to leave the art room clean at the end of class time.
• Maintains professional competence and continuous improvement through in‑service education and other professional growth activities.
• Participates in school‑level planning, faculty meetings/committees and other school system groups.
• Uses community resources to enhance the instructional program.
• Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations and board policy.
• Fulfills duties specific to art instruction such as instructing pupils in art appreciation and fundamentals, preparing participatory lesson plans, selecting instruments and materials, demonstrating methods, evaluating pupils' work, accompanying pupils on field trips to art exhibits and museums, instructing virtual trips, specializing in teaching one or more types of art, directing planning and supervision of student contests and arranging art exhibits, working closely with the physical education instructor for rehearsals, assisting with videotaping performances, serving as master‑of‑ceremonies at art exhibits, making recommendations for program improvements and inclusion of art in other curriculum areas.

Physical and Environmental Requirements

• Requires prolonged sitting or standing.
• Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push objects or materials.
• Requires the ability to work in noisy and crowded environments.
• Occasionally requires stooping, bending, or reaching.
• Requires some traveling.

Experience

Prior teaching experience for the appropriate grade level is preferred.

Equipment

Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.

Travel Requirements

Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

Assessment

Performance will be evaluated in accordance with New Jersey state law (Title 18A) and the iLearn Schools Inc. board policies and procedures.
