Job summary

Surry Community College in Dobson, NC is seeking an Art Instructor to teach across seated, online, and hybrid formats with an 18-credit hour load per semester. The position includes academic advising, college service, and ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

  • Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Studio Art, 3D Design, Ceramics, Sculpture, or a closely related visual arts discipline (Terminal Degree Preferred).
  • MFA or MA with the ability to teach studio ART classes (preferred).
  • Credential to teach Art History (preferred).
  • Completed Quality Matters Teaching Online Certificate or equivalent certification (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Teach across seated, online, hybrid modalities as needed.
  • Maintain an 18 credit hour teaching load per semester.
  • Create syllabi meeting course requirements and administer/assess assignments.

Job Description - Summary

The teaching load for this position is 18 credit hours per semester. Instructors must be prepared to teach across educational mediums (seated, online, hybrid/blended modalities, information highway, etc.) as needed. Other duties include academic advising, college service, and professional development activities. Instructors are expected to abide by all applicable college policies. They are also expected to stay current with all college-required training ( FERPA , Title IX, etc.).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
I. TEACHING
  • Conducting in a professional manner all class hours as assigned by the course schedule and academic calendar.
  • The teaching load for Art is 18 contact hours fall and spring semesters.
  • Creating correct, professional syllabi that meet Faculty Syllabus Checklist requirements.
  • Creating, administering, and accurately assessing substantive assignments and activities that require critical thinking.
  • Meeting classes on time and for the full duration of the published class time.
  • Posting office hours each semester, providing copies for the Division Chair and Associate Dean of Arts & Sciences, and meeting all posted office hours.
  • Attending all mandatory divisional and college-wide meetings and graduation ceremonies.
  • Notifying the division chair as soon as possible in the event of illness.
  • Maintaining alternative educational activities which students may use in the event of faculty illness.
  • Supporting and following college policies and procedures.
  • Assuming reasonable responsibility for security, maintenance, and inventory of assigned equipment and supplies.
  • Preparing and submitting accurate and precise attendance rosters, student grades, book orders, leave reports, and other assigned documents when due.
  • Assisting in the selection of textbooks and maintaining updated text information.
  • Substituting for other faculty members as assigned by the Division Chair or AD.
  • Participating actively in institutional effectiveness planning by identifying expected student outcomes, assessment means, and improvement strategies based on assessment results.
  • Properly submitting assignments and the resulting student artifacts when selected for college-wide General Education Assessment.
  • Preparing supplemental teaching activities, such as developing supplemental Moodle course sites, referring weak students for tutoring, consulting with students, and facilitating help or review sessions outside of class time.
  • Work with Fine Arts Lead Instructor guidance on course scheduling, program review, and program activities.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
II. ACADEMIC ADVISING
  • Providing accurate academic advising to students whenever needed.
  • Participating in advisor in-service training.
III . COLLEGE SERVICE : Participating in activities that promote the welfare of the college, such as serving on committees, preparing accreditation reports, mentoring new and adjunct faculty, advising SGA -approved student organizations about Fine Arts events, recruiting for and marketing instructional programs, participating in faculty governance, revising curricula, or otherwise using the faculty member’s academic expertise and skills in the service of the college.
IV. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
  • Participating in mandatory on-campus professional development activities.
  • Participating in professional development activities in the faculty member’s formally recognized area of expertise, such as attending or presenting at professional conferences, participating in summer institutes or short courses, auditing or taking graduate-level courses, and maintaining membership in professional organizations.
