Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
This position exists to patrol the campus, protect property, and respond to emergency situations and requests for assistance. This position is eligible to receive a shift differential.
- Maintain a positive and courteous demeanor at all times; practice open dialogue and understanding, and communicate with others in an honest, professional, and respectful manner.
- Interact, provide and exchange information with students, employees and guests; develop a rapport with members of the university community and surrounding areas; participate in community relations activities.
- Demonstrate a high level of awareness, good judgment, and critical thinking skills in all aspects of the position.
- Conduct proactive, high visibility patrols to prevent theft, vandalism, or other criminal offenses and to identify opportunities to engage and provide service to the campus community and visitors. Observe for and investigate unusual or suspicious circumstances, inappropriate use of University facilities or property. Remain attentive for, report, and follow up on potential security concerns and hazards such as lighting, access control, alarm systems, fire safety, and other concerns that may affect the safety or effective operation of the University. Enforce parking regulations on campus by ticketing, immobilizing, and towing as appropriate.
- Perform general security duties including escorts, jump starts, vehicle access, response to fire/duress/burglar alarms, medical/psychological emergencies, and calls for service; building checks, access, lock-ups, and preliminary investigation of incidents occurring on campus. May provide direction to contract security such as CSC and Apex at special events. May respond to and assist with traffic accidents on or near campus until proper authorities arrive. May assist members of the BU community in proximity to campus as needed.
- Act as first responder to incidents and emergencies. Maintain a working knowledge of the University’s Emergency Management Plan; establish command and implement ICS on any significant crime, emergency, or other serious incident, in accordance with NIMS / ICS training and the Belmont emergency management plan. May perform first aid and assist police, fire, EMS, and other responders. Act as liaison with local law enforcement agencies. Participate in debriefs and critiques to ensure continuous improvement.
- Ensure all needed notifications are made in a timely manner, accurate information is communicated, and proper documentation is completed via incident reports, maintenance requests, field interview cards, jump start forms, vehicle assistance forms, affidavits of complaint, and student misconduct forms.
- May assist with orienting new hires to duties and responsibilities. May present on security-related topics for the campus community and conduct in-service training for officers.

Additional requirements include training in critical incident management, the Incident Command System, the National Incident Management System, and the IPMBA Bicycle Certification Program. Candidates should demonstrate self-restraint, excellent communication skills, the ability to write clear reports, and handle multiple priorities with minimal supervision. Ability to operate computer equipment and two-way radios is also required.
Required Education:
- High school diploma or equivalency plus at least three years of experience demonstrating reliability, good judgment, customer service skills, discretion, decision-making, and interpersonal skills.
- Associates Degree in criminal justice, business, or law enforcement; related experience in higher education; First Aid and CPR certification; ability to work in a multicultural setting.
Required Experience:
Must be able to be certified as an Unarmed Security Guard by the state of Tennessee. Requirements include being at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen or resident alien, of good moral character, free of habitual drug addiction, and with no disqualifying convictions. Must meet state training requirements, submit fingerprint cards for background checks, and pass a background screening.
