Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT seeks an Armed Public Safety Officer to join the Public Safety team. The role is an armed first responder responsible for life safety, incident reporting, and coordination with local law enforcement on campus and nearby properties.

The position includes evening or overnight shifts with shift differential and requires a Connecticut pistol permit and strong reporting skills.

Qualifications

• Must be a graduate law enforcement officer or have at least two years of service and good standing.
• Current State of Connecticut Pistol Permit.
• Ability to obtain CT Armed Security Guard Firearms Permit (Blue Card).
• Basic computer skills required.
• Candidate must pass extensive background investigation including criminal history and psychological exam, as well as physical and drug tests.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work rotating shifts including weekends and holidays.
• Current State of Connecticut driver’s license.

Responsibilities

• Patrol campus as armed first responder to protect life and property.
• Respond to calls for service, conduct preliminary investigations and write detailed incident reports.

• Conduct security patrols 24/7 and provide escorts and crowd management at events.

Overview:

Under the direction of Quinnipiac University's Chief of PublicSafety, we invite applications for the position of Armed PublicSafety Officer. This is an opportunity to join the university toprotect and provide a safe and secure environment for our students,faculty, staff, and visitors. As an Armed Public Safety Officer, you will serve as a liaison and a resource to local law enforcement as needed.

Newly hired officers will be assigned to either the eveningshift or the overnight shift, based on the needs of the department at time of hiring. The hourly rate of pay is $25.00. Evening and overnight shifts include shift differential pay.

Responsibilities:

Patrol duties:

• Armed first responder to all emergencies on campus to protectlife and property.
• Responds to calls for service. Conducts preliminaryinvestigation and writes thorough and detailed incident reports.Contacts local law enforcement as necessary.
• Responds with local law enforcement, fire and EMS to allemergencies occurring off campus at Quinnipiac ownedproperties.
• Conducts preventive patrols and makes routine security checksof all off campus buildings and structures.
• Detects and investigates criminal activity on universityproperty.
• May detain persons who have committed offenses and turn custodyover to local law enforcement.
• Conducts parking enforcement, issues citations, and towsvehicles as necessary.

Campus security services:

• Conducts security patrols of all Quinnipiac properties 24/7,year-round. Patrols are made primarily by vehicle. Walking andbicycle patrols are also performed.
• Answers all alarm calls. Sets/resets alarms. Manages buildingaccess control.
• Makes reports of unsafe building and grounds maintenance issuesto Facilities Department.
• Serves as emergency notifying agency for facilities relatedissues after business hours.
• Assists community members, guests and visitors needing help orsupport.
• Provides security and crowd management services at specialevents such as athletic events, move-in, and graduations.
• Provides escorts and dignitary protection.
• Performs other duties as directed by Chief of Public Safety ordesignee.

Residential Life/Student Affairs:

• Responds to all reported disturbances, emergencies, andsuspicious circumstances in the residence halls.
• Assist Residential Hall Directors with uncooperative orconfrontational residents and unregistered guests.
• Assist Residential Life staff with enforcement of housingpolicies.
• Perform room and/or vehicle searches as authorized byuniversity policy.

Qualifications:

Mandatory Qualifications:

• The Armed Public Safety Officer must be a retired lawenforcement officer from a local, state, or federal agency. If notretired, the applicant must have served as a law enforcementofficer for an aggregate of at least two years and separated fromservice in good standing.
• Current State of Connecticut Pistol Permit.
• Ability to obtain Connecticut State Police Approved ArmedSecurity Guard Firearms Permit (Blue Card).
• Basic computer skills required.
• Candidate must pass extensive background investigationincluding check for criminal history and psychological exam.Candidate must pass physical exam and drug test.
• Effective written and verbal communication skillsrequired.
• Excellent interpersonal and human relation skillsrequired.
• Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment andcommon sense appropriate to the related circumstances.
• Ability to understand and carry out verbal and writteninstructions and prepare accurate and clear information forcomprehensive report preparation.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of job-relatedinformation.
• Ability and willingness to work rotating shifts covering alldays of the week and all hours of the day including weekends andholidays.

Mandatory Documentation Requirements:

• A letter or certificate stating that you are a graduate of anapproved local, state, or federal law enforcement trainingacademy.
• A letter of recommendation from your previous Police Chiefindicating that you served as a local, state or federal lawenforcement officer for an aggregate of 2 years or more andseparated from such service in good standing.
• Current State of Connecticut Pistol Permit.
• Valid Connecticut driver's license.
• DMV driving record history.

Physical Requirements:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee isregularly required to have full range of mobility in upper andlower body and be able to reach overhead. Be able to work invarious positions, including but not limited to, stooping,standing, bending over, sitting, kneeling, and squatting forextended periods of time. Be able to lift, pull and push materialsand equipment to complete the assigned job task. Be able to liftand/or move 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up top 50pounds.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee may beexposed to weather conditions prevalent at the time for a period oftime.
• Specific vision abilities required by this job include closevision such as the ability to read handwritten or typed material,and the ability to adjust focus. This position requires theindividual to meet multiple demands from several people andinteract with the public and other staff.
