Job Details

Job Location: Ark Encounter - Williamstown, KY 41097

Position Type: Full Time

Job Category: Site Development

The HVAC Journeyman Technician is a licensed, highly skilled tradesperson who installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and commercial refrigeration systems. Having completed an apprenticeship and earned licensure, the journeyman works independently to diagnose complex system issues, ensure compliance with applicable building codes, and mentor apprentices and junior maintenance staff. The journeyman is versatile across several trades and executes a wide range of duties in a day as directed by the Manager of Facilities Maintenance (MFM), including building maintenance and general repairs.

The scope is broad. On any given day the journeyman may diagnose and repair equipment ranging from large, packaged rooftop units (up to 90-ton) and commercial refrigeration rack systems to walk-in coolers and freezers, ice machines, reach-in refrigerators, and wall-mount units — and is expected to lead these jobs from diagnosis to completion with little or no supervision. While HVAC and refrigeration are the core trade, the journeyman also supports general facilities work — plumbing, light carpentry, electrical, and general building maintenance — as assigned.

They must possess the ability to interact with staff (at all levels) in a fast-paced environment, sometimes under pressure, remaining pleasant, flexible, proactive, resourceful and efficient, with a high level of professionalism and confidentiality. Expert level written and verbal communication skills, strong decision-making ability and attention to detail are equally important, and they must work independently with little or no supervision.

This position will allow one to impact others through a service mindset centered on making an eternal difference. This position should display our Core Values of SERVE (Serve, Equip, Relate, Value, Engage) when interfacing with both internal and external customers to ensure that the message and mission of Answers in Genesis is portrayed in an effective and God-honoring fashion. This position provides opportunities for spiritual, personal, and professional development.

Responsibilities
  • Promote the mission and standards of Answers in Genesis.
  • Create a SERVE culture environment in all work done.
  • Approach all tasks with a second mile mindset.
  • Prioritize personal integrity in all interactions and assignments.
  • Independently diagnose, repair, and maintain heat pump, air conditioning, and commercial refrigeration systems, with a thorough understanding of refrigerant flow and component identification.
  • Service single-phase, three-phase, and DC-driven equipment, including Mitsubishi mini-split / VRF systems.
  • Perform and oversee general HVAC preventive maintenance: cleaning coils, changing filters and belts, adjusting speed taps, and clearing drain pans and condensate lines.
  • Service the full equipment range — from 90-ton packaged units (fresh air) down to 9,000 BTU portable AC units.
  • Apply superheat and subcooling to accurately charge, diagnose, and optimize systems.
  • Read a gauge set, take system measurements, and charge systems to manufacturer specification.
  • Work safely with a range of refrigerants — R-410A, R-454B / R-454A (A2L), R-448A / R-449A, R-404A, R-290, and legacy R-22 — including precautions specific to mildly flammable (A2L) and high-pressure systems.
  • Perform proper, EPA-compliant refrigerant recovery, evacuation, leak detection, and recordkeeping.
  • Diagnose and repair walk-in coolers and freezers and commercial refrigeration rack systems, ranging from small self-contained units to large rack-based systems.
  • Run and bend proper line sets and braze and make system tie-ins to code.
  • Install and repair ductwork in attics, crawl spaces, basements, and other unconditioned or confined spaces.
  • Look up and source parts (OEM and aftermarket) and replace them correctly.
  • Perform load calculations — heat gain and heat loss — and size equipment for replacements and new installations.
  • Troubleshoot and navigate building automation and controls systems (e.g., Trane Tracer, Distech, Dixell); BMS proficiency strongly preferred.
  • Ensure work complies with applicable building codes, manufacturer specifications, and AiG standards; pull permits as required.
  • Mentor and train apprentices and junior maintenance staff, modeling safe, quality workmanship.
  • Remain versatile and flexible across assignments — ranging from HVAC Tech to Electrician to Plumber as needed — and read blueprints, follow instructions, and adapt as problems arise in the field.
  • Understand and follow lockout/tagout and all safety procedures, treating safety as the top priority for themselves, the maintenance team, AiG employees, and guests; and perform all other duties as assigned by management.
  • And all other duties and responsibilities assigned by management.
