Job summary

Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s Galveston Bay Refinery is seeking an Instrument & Electrical Engineer to join the Area I&E Engineering Team. The Project Engineer II/III will report to the Refining Engineering Manager and provide project management and I&E engineering services to support refinery process operations.

Responsibilities include managing multiple capital/expense projects, ensuring MOC/PSI compliance, coordinating with external consultants, and developing DSPs for leadership review.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required.
  • Two years or more of industry experience required.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without visa sponsorship.
  • Must be able to wear PPE in the refinery and perform field tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Applies project management skills across all phases: development, justification, design, construction, and startup.
  • Manages multiple projects/programs safely, efficiently, and within budget; develops strategies to meet schedules and mitigate delays.
  • Ensures compliance with MOC, PSI, and mechanical integrity documentation; coordinates with external consultants and designers to complete projects and studies cost-effectively.
  • Develops scope, cost estimates, and schedules for capital and expense projects; prepares DSPs and presents to leadership.
  • Collaborates with Maintenance, Construction, and Turnaround teams to support planning and execution.
  • Participates in HAZOP reviews and incident investigations; applies safety and environmental standards to designs.
  • Applies engineering codes and specifications; ensures designs meet safety, environmental, and permitting standards.
  • Promotes safety awareness and takes corrective action when unsafe practices or conditions are observed.
  • Supports day-to-day refinery operations by providing instrumentation and electrical engineering expertise, evaluating equipment and system issues, supporting maintenance activities, and developing practical solutions to operational challenges.
  • Travel 10%
  • Participates in turnaround events as required.

  • Develops scope, cost estimates, and schedules for capital and expense projects; prepares Decision Support Packages (DSPs) andpresents toleadership.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders including Maintenance, Construction, and Turnaround teams to support planning and execution. Coordinates with external consultants and internal teams to support execution.
  • Participates in HAZOP reviews and incident investigations; applies safety and environmental standards to designs.
  • Applies engineering codes and specifications; ensures designs meet safety, environmental, andpermittingstandards.
  • Promotes safety awareness and takes corrective action when unsafe practices or conditions areobserved.

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Specifiesandpurchaseselectrical/instrument engineered material for assigned projects.
  • ProvidesI&E technical support on multi-discipline projects.
  • ProvidesI&E support, critical thinking, and troubleshooting skills forrefineryprocess operations teams.
  • ProvidesI&E assistanceto the Area Teams during process unit Turnarounds.
  • Travel10%
  • Participatesinturnaround events asrequired.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum (Required) Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required. Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering degree preferred. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)

  • Two (2) years or more of industry experience required.

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future

  • Must be able to wearappropriate PPEin the refinery and be able to physically perform all tasks in the field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Electrical Engineering Degree Preferred.
  • Five (5) years or more ofrefining/petrochemicalindustryexperience.
  • Experience withelectrical and instrumentation technologies and electrical areaclassificationand industry standards (NFPA, IEEE, NEMA, API, etc.).
