Job summary

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Galveston Bay Refinery seeks an Instrument & Electrical Engineer to join the Area I&E Engineering Team. The Project Engineer II/III will manage small capital/expense projects and provide I&E support to operations.

Responsibilities include scope/cost/schedule development, DSP preparation, and coordination with maintenance, construction, and turnaround teams. Travel ~10% is required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering is required and must be completed before start date.
  • Experience with electrical and instrumentation technologies in refinery/petrochemical environments is preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects safely, on time, and within budget.

Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Marathon Petroleum Company’s Galveston Bay Refinery is seeking an Instrument & Electrical (I&E) Engineer to join the Area I&E Engineering Team. The Project Engineer II/III will report to the Refining Engineering Manager and provide project management and I&E technical engineering services to support a refinery process operations team. Projects include small capital and expense projects needed to properly maintain and optimize existing operating units. Management of multiple projects concurrently is required.



KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Applies project management skills across all phases: development, justification, design, construction, and startup

  • Manages multiple projects/programs safely, efficiently, and within budget; develops strategies to meet schedules and mitigate delays.

  • Ensures compliance with Management of Change (MOC), Process Safety Information (PSI), and mechanical integrity documentation.

  • Coordinates with external engineering consultants and designers to complete projects and studies cost-effectively.

  • Develops scope, cost estimates, and schedules for capital and expense projects; prepares Decision Support Packages (DSPs) and presents to leadership.

  • Collaborates with stakeholders including Maintenance, Construction, and Turnaround teams to support planning and execution.

  • Coordinates with external consultants and internal teams to support execution.

  • Participates in HAZOP reviews and incident investigations; applies safety and environmental standards to designs.

  • Applies engineering codes and specifications; ensures designs meet safety, environmental, and permitting standards.

  • Promotes safety awareness and takes corrective action when unsafe practices or conditions are observed.

  • Supports day-to-day refinery operations by providing instrumentation and electrical engineering expertise, evaluating equipment and system issues, supporting maintenance activities, and developing practical solutions to operational challenges.



ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Specifies and purchases electrical/instrument engineered material for assigned projects.

  • Provides I&E technical support on multi-discipline projects.

  • Provides I&E support, critical thinking, and troubleshooting skills for refinery process operations teams.

  • Provides I&E assistance to the Area Teams during process unit Turnarounds.

  • Travel 10%

  • Participates in turnaround events as required.



EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required. (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)

  • Electrical, Civil, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering degree preferred.

  • Two (2) years or more of industry experience required.

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the US on a full-time indefinite basis without the need for employment visa sponsorship now or in the future

  • Must be able to wear appropriate PPE in the refinery and be able to physically perform all tasks in the field.

  • Electrical Engineering Degree Preferred.

  • Five (5) years or more of refining/petrochemical industry experience.

  • Experience with electrical and instrumentation technologies and electrical area classification and industry standards (NFPA, IEEE, NEMA, API, etc.).
