Job summary

Maryland Zoo is seeking an Area Manager for Penguin Coast/Africa Barn to provide day-to-day leadership and oversight of the keeper team. You will work closely with taxon curators, behavior team, and medical staff, reporting to the General Curator, and support the Zoo’s mission and DEAI goals.

You will develop SOPs, manage scheduling, and supervise and train staff while ensuring animal welfare, safety, and high standards of husbandry and guest experience.

Qualifications

• Three years paid experience with an AZA accredited zoological institution (preferred).
• At least one year of supervisory experience or equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor professional staff.

Responsibilities

• Lead day-to-day operations of the penguin coast and Africa barn areas.
• Supervise and coordinate keeper staff and schedules.
• Collaborate with curators, behavior team, and medical staff on care and treatment.
• Develop and maintain SOPs for assigned areas.
• Ensure safety and training of volunteers and interns.
