Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs or 3–5 years of residential experience in a higher education setting.
  • 2 years of housing/residence life supervision and training experience.
  • Experience with living-learning communities and campus operations preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and evaluate staff for the residential area; assist in campus-wide staff hiring and training.
  • Oversee housing operations, occupancy management, key control, maintenance requests, and damage assessments.
  • Coordinate pre-term building prep, roster verification, room changes, health and safety inspections, and roommate contracts.
  • Serve as a campus hearing officer within the student discipline system; collaborate with counseling, student health, public safety, and other departments.
  • Participate in on-call rotation 24/7 and live on campus to respond to emergencies and facilities concerns.

Position Overview

Rider University invites applications for an Area Coordinator. Reporting to the Associate Director for Residential Education, the Area Coordinator (AC) is responsible and accountable for the day-to-day management of a residential area comprising multiple buildings and staff, including all aspects of residential learning initiatives, housing operations, and administrative functions.

The AC will assume primary responsibility for supervision and evaluation of staff for their respective area; assist in the hiring and training of staff campus wide; oversee use of a learning outcomes framework for facilitation of residential environments consistent with the strategic goals of the University and the Division of Student Affairs; provide support for living-learning communities and affinity housing groups; coordinate operations functions including occupancy management functions, key control, maintenance work order tracking, and damage assessments and billing for their respective area; oversee and be an active participant in building prep activities prior to the start of each term; manage and oversee administrative functions associated with the residential area, including roster verification, room change processes, health and safety inspections, and roommate contracts; serve as a campus hearing officer within the student discipline system; collaborate with counseling, student health, public safety and other university departments for conflict mediation, and crisis intervention.

As a generalist, the successful candidate must have demonstrated experience working in university residential settings; supervising paraprofessional/student staff; and coordinating housing operations functions. The AC will employ evidence-based best practices to implement and evaluate programs and services and maintain program effectiveness. The AC is expected to work collaboratively and develop productive working partnerships with multiple university departments.

This is a live-on position, which requires the successful candidate to live in an assigned university apartment. The AC is required to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation with other professional staff, remaining within a limited geographic range of the campus, and serving as a support for in-hall staff to respond to emergencies and facilities concerns that occur after normal business hours. This is a full time, 12-month position.

Required Knowledge, Skills And Experience
  • Master’s Degree in Student Affairs, Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration or a closely related field. In lieu of a Master’s degree, a minimum of 3-5 years of full-time residential work experience in a Higher Education setting providing direct service to students, staff, parents and university partners will be taken into consideration.
  • 2 years of experience in housing and residence life/residential education with direct experience providing supervision and training to paraprofessional staff.
  • Experience implementing educational initiatives and overseeing living-learning communities in a college/university context as well as operations and live-in experience strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of housing occupancy management and operations.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, organization and planning skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Sensitivity to and ability to work with students, faculty, and staff of diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster and maintain collaborative working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate teams and groups.
  • Knowledge of all laws likely to have an effect upon University students.
  • Ability to work in a stressful and changing environment and with great attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments and balance competing priorities and develop efficient work plans.
  • Expertise in budget oversight.

  • Proficient in use of technology to carry out electronic communication and develop both printed and electronic documents using computers and the Internet. Experience with Windows system software, Microsoft Office (Excel, Microsoft Word, Power Point), Outlook and other e-mail software.
  • Availability to work varied and flexible hours.
  • Satisfactory background and/or DMV checks required.
