Position Overview

The Area Coordinator serves as a member of the Residence Life teamthat provides vision and direction for their residential communityfor an undergraduate on-campus population of 2700 with a 3-yearcampus live on requirement. The Area Coordinator is responsible forthe management and supervision of one of four residential areas,each housing approximately 500-700 residents and direct supervisionand evaluation of the Resident Assistant student staff of12-19.

Responsibilities

• Student Growth and Development
  • Support students navigating the life cycle of relationships and complex interpersonal dynamics
  • Support student leadership and campus engagement opportunities to enhance the residential and campus community
  • Promote community standards and serve as a conduct officer to adjudicate violations of Residence Life policies and procedures
• Community Building and Support
  • Support student programming initiatives and coordinate community events
  • Maintain regular contact with students in residence
  • Actively collaborate with Faculty in Residence and other community partners to support development of the residential community
• Supervision
  • Supervise, evaluate, and coach a staff of 12-19 undergraduate student staff/resident assistants
  • Actively participate in the student staff recruitment, selection, and training process
• Student Well Being
  • Conduct health & safety checks for students of concern
  • Proactively promote well-being resources on campus
  • Locate and talk to students about ongoing issues
  • Provide referrals to resources to address the student's concern(s)
  • Follow up with students after distressing situations
• Administration & Management
  • Maintain complete and accurate records regarding student and building concerns
  • Manage all community budgets
• On Call Duty Rotation
  • Serve in campus wide on-call rotation for up to 6 weeks per semester
  • Respond via phone & in-person to various emergency and crisis situations
  • Collaborate with emergency personnel and campus resources to provide student support
  • Submit appropriate documentation to report concerns and actions taken

• Facilities Management
  • Execute all building related tasks including opening, closing, health & safety checks, and all needed maintenance activities
  • Work closely with American Campus Communities or Butler Facilities based on the residential area
  • Maintain accurate records regarding occupancy, room changes, facilities concerns, and damage billing for the unit
• University and Division Responsibilities
• Other duties as assigned
• Facilitate a major office project or functional committee team to promote the success of our students.
• Maintain a strong partnership with Manager of Operations of American Campus Communities or with Butler University Facilities based on the residential area. Maintain accurate records regarding occupancy, room changes, and damage billing for the unit. ‘

Required Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel,or related field preferred.
• Bachelor's Degree Required
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills
• Experience working with and supervising college students
• Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and writtenform
• Ability to exercise sound judgment in making decisions
• Ability to diffuse and respond effectively to situationsinvolving intense pressures and/or unpredictable persons
• Physical ability to climb stairs in order to reach the topfloor of a residence hall in an emergency situation withoutassistance
• Demonstrated understanding of national best practices relatedto Residence Life work
• Demonstrated skills with technology and informationmanagement
• Thorough knowledge of student and identity development theoriesand their potential for implementation in practice
• This is a live-in position that includes an apartmentin-residence - candidate must have a desire to engage with residential students

Preferred Qualifications

• 2 years of residence life graduate assistantship experienceand/or 1-year of professional experience working with residentialstudents.
