Job summary

Harvard Radcliffe Institute is seeking an Archivist for the Schlesinger Library to process archival collections and ensure accessible, inclusive descriptions. You will create DACS-compliant finding aids, describe materials, and pursue best practices in born-digital processing.

You will work with a collaborative team, supervise student staff, and contribute to public access and outreach. Standard hours are 35 per week in a hybrid/Harvard work environment.

Qualifications

• ALA-accredited MLS (Master’s in Library Science) with a concentration in archives management, or an MA in history or a related field.
• Two+ years of experience processing archival materials in various formats.
• Knowledge of national data standards related to archival control (DACS, EAD, MARC, LCSH, AAT).
• Proficiency with common office software and archival management systems.

Responsibilities

• Appraises, arranges, describes, preserves, and catalogs archival collections in both analog and digital formats.
• Determines appropriate levels of arrangement and description to ensure flexible processing.
• Creates DACS-compliant archival descriptions, including finding aids, following national standards.
• May supervise student assistants and interns, including training and assigning work.
• Covers regular shifts at the Schlesinger Library reference desk.
• Fosters collaborative relationships within the department and across Harvard Library.
