Job summary

The University of Virginia is seeking a part-time student assistant for the Albert & Shirley Small Special Collections Library. Work-Study eligibility is required for Fall/Spring, with duties in archives management and digitization taking place 9:00 AM–5:00 PM, Monday–Friday.

The position runs Aug 25, 2026 to May 14, 2027 and pays $16.71 per hour. Responsibilities include organizing collections, data entry into ArchivesSpace, and assisting with packing, labeling, and handling rare materials.

Qualifications

• Work-Study eligibility during Fall/Spring semesters is required.
• Strong self-motivation, analytical skills and critical thinking.
• Interest in history, photographs, digital records, and papers.
• Experience using Microsoft Office suite.
• Ability to lift 40-pound boxes occasionally.
• Able to enter data and handle databases with care.
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to multi-task and work independently or with others.
• Passing a background check is required.

Responsibilities

• Organize and re-house collections and enter information into ArchivesSpace or other trained platforms.
• Transfer digital files with archival tools at a basic level.
• Assist with packing/unpacking, inventories, labeling, photo-documenting, and photocopying.
• Retrieve manuscript, university archive, and rare book materials for patron requests.
• Shift boxes and participate in special projects as needed.
