Job summary

Morson Edge is seeking an experienced Principal Architectural Technologist/Lead Designer to support a portfolio of major construction and architectural projects within a local authority environment. You will lead multi-disciplinary teams, manage programmes, budgets and quality, and act as Lead Designer and Principal Designer under CDM 2015.

You will coordinate design and construction phases, develop cost estimates and tender documentation, and advise clients on procurement routes and delivery

Qualifications

  • Significant experience as Architectural Technologist or senior architectural role.
  • Proven experience leading multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Delivery of construction projects from feasibility/design through procurement and construction.
  • Strong knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015, esp. Principal Designer duties.
  • Experience preparing technical drawings, specifications and tender documentation.
  • Proficiency with NBS and AutoCAD.
  • Experience with building contracts, procurement processes and tender analysis.
  • Experience coordinating contractors and other construction professionals.
  • Solid understanding of project cost, programme, quality and risk management.
  • Excellent communication, report-writing and presentation skills.
  • Ability to chair meetings and represent the service at senior level.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and coordinate multi-disciplinary design teams through design, procurement and construction phases.
  • Deliver projects to agreed programme, budget and quality standards.
  • Undertake Lead Designer and Principal Designer roles under CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Coordinate construction projects with architects, engineers, contractors and other disciplines.
  • Conduct feasibility studies, surveys and technical assessments with reporting to senior management.
  • Prepare cost estimates, sketches, working drawings, technical details and tender docs.
  • Prepare tender docs using NBS and AutoCAD.
  • Advise on contracts, procurement routes and delivery options.
  • Analyse tenders and prepare recommendations for acceptance.
  • Represent the service at senior client and stakeholder meetings.
  • Coordinate principal contractors and subcontractors throughout delivery.
  • Chair project meetings and maintain communication with clients and teams.
  • Provide technical/professional advice to in-house teams and other areas.
  • Assist clients with CDM compliance and project risk management.
  • Coordinate projects to meet BREEAM requirements.
  • Promote safe, practical design solutions and manage design risks.
  • Collaborate with designers to mitigate design/construction risks.
  • Keep up-to-date with architecture/construction developments and best practices.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, financial and contract procedures.
  • Support performance management and cost/resource monitoring.

Job description

Morson Edge are currently recruiting for an experienced Principal Architectural Technologist / Lead Designer to support the delivery of a portfolio of major construction and architectural projects within a local authority environment.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced architectural professional to take a lead role across a range of projects, working closely with the Major Projects Manager, Principal Architectural Technologist, client bodies and multi-disciplinary professional teams.

The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality architectural design solutions within a commercial environment, ensuring projects are delivered to agreed programme, cost, quality and compliance requirements.

You will also undertake the Lead Designer and Principal Designer roles, ensuring compliance with the CDM Regulations 2015, while providing professional advice and coordination throughout the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

As Principal Architectural Technologist you will:

  • Lead and coordinate multi-disciplinary professional design teams throughout the design, procurement and construction phases.
  • Take responsibility for the delivery of projects to agreed programme, budget and quality standards.
  • Undertake the Lead Designer role on construction projects and act as Principal Designer in accordance with CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Manage the coordination and administration of construction projects, working closely with architects, architectural technologists, engineers, contractors and other professional disciplines.
  • Undertake feasibility studies, surveys and technical assessments, producing reports and recommendations for consideration by senior management.
  • Lead the preparation of cost estimates, sketch designs, working drawings, technical details, specifications and tender documentation.
  • Prepare tender documentation using NBS and AutoCAD systems.
  • Advise client bodies on building contracts, procurement routes and project delivery options.
  • Analyse tenders and prepare reports and recommendations for acceptance.
  • Represent the service at senior‑level client and stakeholder meetings.
  • Manage and coordinate principal contractors, contractors and sub‑contractors throughout the delivery of projects.
  • Chair project meetings, prepare reports and maintain effective communication with clients, professional teams and other stakeholders.
  • Provide proactive technical and professional advice to in‑house construction professionals and other service areas.
  • Support clients and project teams in meeting their obligations under CDM legislation.
  • Coordinate projects to ensure compliance with BREEAM requirements.
  • Promote safe, practical and compatible design solutions, ensuring construction and design risks are appropriately considered throughout all project stages.
  • Work collaboratively with designers and other stakeholders to identify and mitigate risks arising from design and construction decisions.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of developments in architecture, construction, engineering safety, legislation and professional best practice.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant organisational policies, financial and contract procedure rules and quality assurance systems.
  • Assist with the development and implementation of performance management systems and procedures.
  • Monitor project costs, design expenditure and resource utilisation, ensuring appropriate records are maintained and performance is measured against agreed criteria.
  • Deputise for the Principal Architectural Technologist when required.
About You

We are looking for an experienced architectural professional with a strong technical and project delivery background who is confident operating within a complex, multi-disciplinary environment.

You will ideally have:

  • Significant experience working as an Architectural Technologist, Principal Architectural Technologist, Lead Designer or similar senior architectural role.
  • Proven experience leading and coordinating multi-disciplinary design teams.
  • Experience delivering construction projects from feasibility and design through procurement and construction.
  • Strong understanding and practical experience of the CDM Regulations 2015, particularly in relation to the Principal Designer role.
  • Experience of preparing technical drawings, specifications and tender documentation.
  • Strong knowledge of NBS and AutoCAD.
  • Experience with building contracts, procurement processes and tender analysis.
  • Experience managing and coordinating contractors and other construction professionals.
  • Strong understanding of project cost, programme, quality and risk management.
  • Experience working directly with clients and senior stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of BREEAM and sustainable design principles.
  • Excellent communication, report‑writing and presentation skills.
  • The ability to chair meetings, provide professional advice and confidently represent the service at senior level.
  • A proactive approach to identifying and managing design and construction risks.
  • A commitment to Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and keeping up to date with developments within the architectural and construction sector.
