Licensed or non-licensed Steel+Spark | Phoenix, Arizona 3–5 Years of Professional Experience

Steel+Spark is seeking an Architectural Staff Level I team member with 2+ years of professional experience and a professional degree in architecture.

This position is intended for an architect or architectural professional who is fully competent in the conventional aspects of architectural practice and is capable of independently performing a variety of assignments involving design, documentation, code analysis, coordination, and project development.

The ideal candidate is a strong designer, technically capable, highly organized, and comfortable working on projects from early design through construction documentation and permitting. This position will work closely with senior architects, engineers, consultants, manufacturing teams, and construction personnel to develop practical, well-coordinated architectural solutions.

What You'll Do
  • Independently perform architectural assignments for projects of moderate size and complexity.
  • Develop architectural designs, layouts, plans, sections, elevations, details, shop drawings and other project documentation.
  • Assist with projects from conceptual design through construction documents, permitting, and construction.
  • Perform design, planning, programming, and occupancy analyses.
  • Prepare and develop limited design layouts and studies.
  • Research and apply applicable building codes, zoning requirements, accessibility standards, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare code analysis documentation and assist in responding to AHJ and municipal plan-review comments.
  • Prepare and coordinate architectural construction-document sets.
  • Coordinate architectural drawings with structural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, civil, and other consultants.
  • Review consultant drawings for conflicts, coordination issues, and completeness.
  • Prepare project specifications and compile and analyze relevant project information.
  • Write technical reports, narratives, specifications, and other project documentation.
  • Review completed reports, plans, estimates, specifications, and calculations for accuracy and consistency.
  • Assist with permit applications, plan-review responses, and coordination with local jurisdictions.
  • Participate in project meetings with clients, consultants, contractors, and internal teams.
  • Track project deliverables, deadlines, design decisions, and outstanding coordination items.
  • Perform field observations and assist with construction administration as required.
  • Work directly with Steel+Spark's manufacturing and construction teams to ensure designs are practical, coordinated, and buildable.
  • Support senior architects and project managers while taking ownership of assigned portions of projects.
What We're Looking For
  • 2+ years of professional architectural experience required.
  • Professional degree in architecture required.
  • Architectural license is welcomed but not required.
  • Strong understanding of conventional architectural design and construction practices.
  • Experience producing architectural construction documents.
  • Strong understanding of building systems, materials, detailing, and construction methods.
  • Working knowledge of the IBC, IRC, accessibility requirements, and general code-compliance principles.
  • Experience working with AHJs, municipalities, permitting agencies, or plan-review processes is strongly preferred.
  • Exceptional Revit skills.
  • Strong AutoCAD skills.
  • Ability to independently develop and coordinate architectural drawing sets.
  • Understanding of BIM standards, Revit families, detailing, annotation, and consultant coordination.
  • 3D modeling, rendering, and visualization skills are a plus.
  • Experience with SketchUp, Rhino, Enscape, Twinmotion, Lumion, or similar software is beneficial.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines simultaneously.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality control.
  • Ability to research technical issues and develop practical solutions.
  • Comfortable receiving directions while also working independently and taking responsibility for assigned work.
The Person We're Looking For

You have developed a solid foundation in architectural practice and are ready to take greater ownership of your work.

You are comfortable moving between design, technical documentation, code research, consultant coordination, and permitting. You understand how the different parts of a building come together and are able to identify coordination issues before they become construction problems.

You are organized, dependable, and capable of managing your own assignments while communicating clearly with the project team.

You take pride in producing accurate, coordinated drawings and understand that successful architecture depends on both good design and disciplined execution.

You are interested in seeing projects move beyond the drawing set and enjoy being involved in how buildings are manufactured, permitted, assembled, and constructed.

About Steel+Spark

Steel+Spark is a Phoenix-based architecture, manufacturing, and construction company focused on developing innovative prefabricated and modular building systems.

Our architectural team works directly alongside engineering, manufacturing, and construction personnel. This creates an integrated environment where architects have the opportunity to follow projects from early design through documentation, permitting, fabrication, and construction.

Our projects include housing, hospitality, commercial, institutional, and specialty prefabricated building systems.

Why Steel+Spark

Steel+Spark provides architects and designers with the opportunity to work across a broader portion of the building process than is typical in a traditional architecture firm.

You will work on real projects, solve real technical and permitting challenges, collaborate directly with the people building your designs, and see your work move from a Revit model to a completed building.

We are looking for someone who wants to continue developing as an architect while taking increasing responsibility for design, documentation, coordination, permitting, and getting projects built.
