Position Summary

We are seeking a creative, technically skilled, and detail-oriented Architectural Designer to join our New York studio. This role requires a well-rounded professional with a strong foundation in conceptual design, documentation, and interdisciplinary coordination. The ideal candidate will support the development and execution of architectural projects across all phases, with opportunities to contribute to diverse project types and scales.

As a Designer at HLW, you will engage in massing studies, site planning, space planning, design development, and technical documentation. You’ll collaborate closely with project leaders and consultants to help deliver integrated design solutions that meet client goals, code requirements, and HLW’s standards of excellence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop architectural design concepts from early visioning through construction documents.
  • Conduct massing studies and contribute to site planning, zoning analysis, and feasibility assessments.
  • Participate in programming, space planning, and layout studies aligned with project goals and user needs.
  • Prepare design drawings, renderings, presentation boards, and client deliverables in 2D and 3D formats.
  • Collaborate with senior designers, project managers, and technical teams to refine and document design intent.
  • Integrate building systems, consultant inputs, and code requirements into cohesive architectural solutions.
  • Assist with the production of construction documents, including plans, elevations, sections, and details.
  • Participate in site surveys, field verifications, and construction administration tasks as needed.
  • Maintain project deadlines, track deliverables, and manage multiple workstreams with attention to detail.
  • Stay informed on current industry trends, materials, building technologies, and sustainable practices.
  • Support a collaborative and inclusive studio culture through effective communication and team engagement.

Role Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Architecture from an accredited institution.
  • 2–10 years of professional experience in architectural design.
  • Architectural licensure preferred or actively pursuing licensure.
  • Experience in Higher Education, commercial, residential, or workplace design.
  • LEED accreditation or knowledge of sustainable design practices preferred.
  • Strong conceptual and graphic communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Revit is required; experience with Rhino, Enscape, Lumion, V-Ray, and Adobe Creative Suite is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of zoning regulations, building codes, ADA standards, and sustainability benchmarks.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce detailed documentation and coordinate with engineering disciplines.
  • Familiarity with construction sequencing, consultant coordination, and agency submissions.
  • Strong organizational, analytical, and time management skills with the ability to work on multiple projects concurrently.

The expected salary range for this position is $65,000-$100,000. We will consider relevant experience, qualifications, location, and other job-related factors in determining compensation.
