Job summary

A global engineering firm is seeking an Archaeology Technician to assist with projects in Virginia and surrounding states. The successful candidate will execute various field-related tasks under supervision, including conducting archaeological surveys and data recording. This role requires adaptability for extensive travel and the ability to perform fieldwork in rugged terrain. Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in archaeology or closely related field preferred.
  • At least one season of field school or supervised experience preferred.
  • Archaeological field experience in Virginia or the Mid-Atlantic preferred.
  • Completion of background check and drug/alcohol screening is required before employment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in archaeology/anthropology preferred; field school experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in archaeological field surveys using various methodologies.
  • Record and evaluate soils; conduct photography.
  • Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts.
  • Set up site grids, datums, and excavation units; map site plans and units in plan/profile.
  • Identify artifacts and cultural features following standard collection procedures.
  • Lab assist duties when indoor work is available.
  • Manage field equipment and support crew chiefs.

Job description

Stantec is seeking temporary/on‑call Archaeology Technicians to assist with several projects in the Mid‑Atlantic region (mainly Maryland and Virginia) with additional work possible in surrounding states. Immediate work is available with the potential for continued project‑by‑project assignments.

The successful applicant will be responsible for executing field‑related tasks under the supervision of a Project Archaeologist and Crew Chief. This position requires extensive travel with frequent overnight stays. Individual occupancy hotel rooms with per diem (receipt‑based by contract requirement) will be provided based on the appropriate GSA rate for the project region. The pay range for this role located in Maryland is posted in compliance with pay‑transparency laws.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in archaeological field surveys utilizing a variety of field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, surface collection, and monitoring.
  • Record and evaluate soils using color (Munsell), texture, and inclusions; orientate using a compass, USGS topographic maps, plan maps, iPads enabled with GPS location services, and supplemented by a Trimble R1 GPS receiver; and conduct photography.
  • Experience with digital data collection via ESRI’s Field Maps app for ArcGIS is an asset.
  • Assist with setting up a site grid, datum, and excavation units; map site plans and individual shovel‑tests, units, and features in plan and profile.
  • Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts following standard collection procedures.
  • Identify cultural features.
  • Clean and prepare site surfaces for mapping and photography.
  • Manage field equipment.
  • Serve as a laboratory assistant when indoor work is available.
Capabilities and Credentials
  • Interest in and knowledge of cultural resource management and archaeological methods for survey, assessment, and excavation.
  • Adaptability and willingness to work as part of a team and independently.
  • Ability and willingness to work under varied weather conditions.
  • Physical ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours through rugged terrain and carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.
  • Dedication to following and promoting a strong safety culture; industry‑specific safety training certificates are an asset.
  • Valid driver’s license required and good driving record.
  • Completion of a background check and drug/alcohol screening is required before employment.
  • Extensive travel required (up to 90%).
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in archaeology/anthropology or a closely related field preferred.
  • At least one season of a field school or supervised field experience preferred.
  • Archaeological field experience in Virginia or the Mid‑Atlantic preferred.

Typical office environment involves computers and prolonged sedentary periods; field work may expose you to the elements, including inclement weather.
