Job summary

The Davey Tree Expert Company is seeking a climbing arborist trainee to join a team in Crystal Lake, IL. Office outdoors with new daily scenery, you’ll learn climbing and all aspects of tree pruning and removal on site.

Starting pay is $20–$23 per hour with paid time off, advancement opportunities, and comprehensive safety training. This internship involves travel up to 25% and a strong focus on safety and professional growth.

Qualifications

• Love of the outdoors.
• Background in Forestry, Horticulture, Landscaping, or working at heights.
• Ability to complete the Davey Tree Trimmer Orientation Program upon hire.
• Ability to complete the Davey Tree First Aid, CPR and defensive driving course upon hire.
• Preferred: Pesticide licenses/certificates as required by state law.

Responsibilities

• Learn to climb trees and be paid to do that.
• Operate as a member of a tree crew while learning new skills.
• Perform all aspects of tree pruning and removal safely and skillfully for clients.
• Identify trees and follow industry pruning guidelines.
• Prune, thin, and remove deadwood throughout the canopy.
• Learn to install cables, bracing, and lightning protection systems.
• Assist in removal of hazardous trees.
• Maintain, prepare and operate tools and equipment including chainsaws, chippers, lifts.

Job Duties

What You’ll Do:

• Learn to climb trees! (Yes, we will pay you to do that.)
• Operate as a member of a tree crew while progressively learning new skills
• Learn to perform all aspects of tree pruning and removal services safely and skillfully for clients. Including but not limited to:
• Tree identification and industry pruning guidelines
• Prune, thin, and remove deadwood throughout the tree canopy
• Learn how to install cables, bracing, and lightning protection systems
• Assist in removal of hazardous trees
• Properly maintain, prepare and operate all tools and equipment including chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts, and more.
