The Davey Tree Expert Company in Crystal Lake, IL is seeking a Climbing Arborist Trainee to join our on-site tree care team. You’ll learn climbing, pruning, and removal skills while supporting a full-service crew in the field.

Starting pay ranges from $20 to $23 per hour, with benefits and opportunities for advancement through rigorous training and safety programs. This entry-level role emphasizes outdoor work, teamwork, and hands-on learning in forestry and horticulture settings.

Qualifications

• Love of outdoors.
• Background in Forestry, Horticulture, Landscaping, or working at heights (preferred).
• Complete Davey Tree Orientation Program on hire.
• Complete Davey Tree First Aid, CPR and defensive driving course on hire.
• Preferred: Pesticide licenses/certificates (if required by state law).

Responsibilities

• Learn to climb trees and be paid to do that.
• Operate as a member of a tree crew while progressively learning new skills.
• Learn to perform all aspects of tree pruning and removal services safely and skillfully for clients.
• Prune, thin, and remove deadwood throughout the tree canopy.
• Learn how to install cables, bracing, and lightning protection systems.
• Assist in removal of hazardous trees.
• Properly maintain, prepare and operate tools and equipment including chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts.

Position Overview

Trimand removetrees, remove unwanted,diseased or dying limbs on trees, or to affect the health and safety of trees or surrounding areasby performing the following duties.

Job Duties

What You’ll Do:

• Learn to climb trees! (Yes, we will pay you to do that.)
• Operate as a member of a tree crew while progressively learning new skills
• Learn to perform all aspects of tree pruning and removal services safely and skillfully for clients. Including but not limited to:
• Tree identification and industry pruning guidelines
• Prune, thin, and remove deadwood throughout the tree canopy
• Learn how to install cables, bracing, and lightning protection systems
• Assist in removal of hazardous trees
• Properly maintain, prepare and operate all tools and equipment including chainsaws, chippers, aerial lifts, and more.

Qualifications
