The hiring amount for this position is $16.50 an hour. This is a non-exempt, temporary (variable/limited-hour) position, and is not eligible for city benefits.
The Parks and Recreation Maintenance Worker performs routine semi-skilled work in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments involving the use of common tools and operates equipment in connection with the semi-skilled tasks to which assigned (this may include but is not limited to mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, hand operated tools, power washers, etc.); and maintaining appropriate records. Does related work as required. Primarily and most frequently the work done here is under general supervision, with related functional areas and more advanced applications.
Provides customer service and city beautification through efficient maintenance of the parks, recreational facilities, grounds, streets, schools, mall, and UVA corner. Provides service assistance in many functional areas within the Park system, which may include any one or more of the following tasks: Mowing and turf maintenance, aquatic facility maintenance (including general cleaning of splash pads, pool areas, and surrounding facilities, picking up supplies, and moving items between locations), skate park maintenance, horticulture maintenance (such as maintenance of city-owned trees, including planting, pruning, felling, mulching, watering trees, flower beds and pots), custodial duties on the downtown mall, UVA corner, park properties, and/or Right-Of-Ways, performs street mowing and Right-Of-Way maintenance, and assists with maintenance, installation and construction of athletic fields, park and recreational facilities, trails, etc.

Skills: Some knowledge of the maintenance, repair and manual tasks of the area to which assigned; some knowledge of the safe use and operation and preventive maintenance of the common hand and power tools required in the work; some knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of the equipment to which assigned; skill in the use of the equipment to which assigned; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions. Physical requirements for this position as outlined by the Department of Labor: HEAVY WORK: Heavy Work involves exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
This position may be required to work weekends, nights, holidays and/or emergency on-call. This is a safety sensitive position subject to drug and alcohol testing for pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident and random testing.
The majority of time spent in this position involves outside work which may involve extreme temperatures, extreme brightness, chemicals/hazardous waste, blood-borne pathogens, infectious bacteria, fuels and allergens. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
This position also requires the regular use of or subject to vibration, ladder/step stool, traffic/roadways, driving light equipment and/or moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
