Job summary

Virginia Recreation and Park Society is seeking an Aquatic Instructor to provide a safe swimming environment, enforce rules, and deliver ARC Water Safety Programs across multiple park sites. The role supports community recreation and requires flexibility for a 7-day operation with early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Candidates must hold ARC WSI (or Lifeguard Instructor) certification, be 16+, and complete a departmental skills test.

Qualifications

  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years old.
  • Requires ARC Water Safety Instructor certification to instruct preschool, adult, and ARC aquatic programs.
  • Or must possess ARC Lifeguard Instructor certification to teach ARC Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED/O2.
  • Must obtain ARC First Aid/CPR/AED within 30 days of employment.
  • Must satisfactorily complete departmental skills test prior to employment.
  • Must work rotating shifts including weekends and holidays and be available for overtime when needed.

Job description

Individual will provide a safe swimming environment

Provide customer service and enforce rules

Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Instruct all levels of American Red Cross Water Safety Programs in accordance with American RedCross and department standards.

Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge and physical requirements as demanded by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

Schedule

This position can be a 7 day a week operation including early mornings, evening, weekend and holidays.

Hours will be based on scheduled classes, average under 27 hours

The individual selected for this position will be housed at a primary site but may be scheduled between other park sites/facilities. Schedules will be adjusted seasonally and will vary weekly based on events, facility coverage, and weather. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours, overtime, splits shifts or maybe be relocated to another location or job assignment in response to short- term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies including weekends, evenings and holidays.

As a condition of employment, all employees must attend P&R Connection (Department Orientation). If selected for the position, you will be provided an approximate training date at the time of hire. Training is held from 8:30am-5:00pm, every other Friday, at the Parks & Recreation Administration Building. When an exemption is permittable, a hybrid version of the training is available, but will require training attendance on a weekend.

Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least sixteen (16) years old. Requires possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification to instruct preschool, adult, and American Red Cross aquatic programs; or must possess valid American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor certification to teach ARC Lifeguard/First Aid/CPR/AED/O2; or must possess valid certification or experience appropriate to the specialized program area, i.e., competitive swimming, diving, or specialized aquatic instruction. Must obtain American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED within 30 days of employment. Must satisfactorily complete a departmental skills test prior to employment. Special Requirements: Must be able to work rotating shifts (days/evenings/midnights) including weekends and holidays and be available to work overtime when required to meet operational needs. All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies.

VRS Contribution

All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
