Position Summary

The Aquatics Director supports the mission of the Newtown Athletic Club (NAC) by developing, organizing, implementing, and overseeing high-quality aquatics programs that serve our members and community.

This position provides leadership for all aquatics operations, including staff management, facility oversight, safety compliance, program development, budgeting, and customer service. NAC’s aquatics facilities include an indoor pool, teaching pool, outdoor adult resort pool with hot tub, and an interactive family waterpark.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Leadership and Staff Management

• Recruit, hire, train, supervise, develop, schedule, and evaluate aquatics staff and volunteers.
• Foster a positive and professional work environment that motivates staff and promotes exceptional performance.
• Ensure all required staff certifications, training records, and compliance documentation remain current.
• Provide ongoing coaching, leadership, and professional development opportunities for staff.

Aquatics Operations

• Direct and supervise daily aquatics operations to maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment.
• Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local, and NAC health and safety regulations.
• Oversee pool maintenance, water chemistry, equipment inspections, and facility readiness.
• Coordinate facility use and scheduling for programs, rentals, and special events.
• Maintain accurate records of chemical testing, maintenance, inspections, and operational procedures.

Program Development

• Develop, implement, administer, and evaluate aquatics programs for members of all ages and skill levels.
• Create and manage seasonal schedules for swim lessons, aquatic fitness classes, specialty programs, and recreational activities.
• Provide strategic leadership for youth and adult swim lesson programs and competitive swim team operations.
• Evaluate program participation, capacity, quality, and effectiveness, making recommendations for continued improvement and growth.
• Identify opportunities to expand aquatics programming in alignment with NAC’s mission and strategic goals.

Budget and Administration

• Develop, monitor, and manage the aquatics department budget to achieve financial objectives.
• Compile and analyze program participation statistics, enrollment data, and operational reports.
• Maintain accurate departmental records and documentation.
• Forecast staffing, programming, and operational needs throughout the year.

Marketing and Member Engagement

• Support the promotion and marketing of aquatics programs through internal and external communication channels.
• Build positive relationships with members, guests, staff, and the community.
• Address member questions, concerns, and feedback professionally and promptly.
• Identify opportunities to increase program awareness, participation, retention, and member engagement.

Additional Responsibilities

• Support special events and other club initiatives as assigned.
• Perform additional duties as requested by senior leadership.

Position Requirements

Qualifications

• Previous experience managing traditional aquatic facilities and waterpark environments.
• Understanding of water slide operations, licensing, and inspection requirements.
• Demonstrated leadership and staff management experience.
• Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
• Knowledge of pool operations, water chemistry, risk management, and aquatic safety standards.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

Required Certifications

• Current Lifeguarding Certification
• Current CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers Certification
• Current First Aid Certification
• Lifeguard Instructor Certification preferred
• Certified Pool Operator (CPO) Certification preferred or must be obtained within the designated timeframe

Work Schedule

This position requires a flexible schedule, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed to support facility operations, programs, and special events.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in indoor and outdoor aquatic environments.
• Ability to respond quickly and effectively during emergencies.
