The purpose of this position is to provide citizens the opportunity to participate in aquatic programs. This is accomplished by supervising and training personnel, developing and implementing various programs and maintaining water quality in pools and hot tubs. Other duties may include purchasing supplies and equipment, overseeing facility operations and interfacing with other City employees and citizens. This position provides direction to other employees.

• Supervises aquatic staff, including the Lifeguard Supervisor and Recreation Programmer – Aquatics by conducting the hiring process including selecting candidates and interviewing for open positions, training staff, promoting and maintaining positive work environment for optimum staff morale, evaluating staff performance and conducting performance reviews, administering staff meetings, scheduling staff, holding staff accountable for expectations, handling staff concerns and suggestions and administering disciplinary actions as needed.
• Oversee the aquatic usage and lane schedule, including coordination of pool space for programs, lap swimming, swim team practices, rentals and other aquatic activities. Monitors facilities need, addresses operation concerns to ensure a safe, efficient and effective operation.
• Oversee the summer swim team program by maintaining relationships with contracted coaches, coordinating the summer meet schedule with the region’s swim teams, and addressing operational needs throughout the season.
• Ensures facility is following aquatic safety standards according to local code and state law. Ensures required inspections are maintained by coordinating pool and water slide inspections.
• Monitors water quality in pools and hot tubs, adjusting chemical levels as needed, and performing routine maintenance of chemical feeder components.
• Completes preventative maintenance and routine operational tasks within the pump room as needed. Monitor equipment, coordinates with maintenance staff, contractors or vendors when additional repairs or services are required.
• Support budget tracking, supply ordering, and report preparation while assisting in meeting facility financial goals and business plans.

• Serves as Manager on Duty, providing leadership, guidance and mentorship to staff while promoting accountability, professionalism and high standards of safety and guest service. Responds to operational issues, guest concerns and emergencies and ensures appropriate procedures are followed.
• Oversee daily facility operations while serving as Manager on Duty, including opening and closing procedures, front desk operations, cash handling and reconciliation of daily transactions.
• Acts as Center Supervisor in the absence of the Center Supervisor, providing oversight of facility operations, staff and customer service and responding to operational or emergency situations as needed.
• Works varied shifts, including opening, closing, evening and weekend hours, as assigned.

Education & Experience

Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• Bachelor’s degree plus two (2) years of relevant work experience; OR
• Associate's degree plus six (6) years of relevant work experience; OR
• High School diploma or equivalent plus ten (10) years of relevant work experience

Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Degrees in Parks and Recreation or a related field is preferred. Experience in Parks, Recreation and Tourism; Therapeutic Recreation; Gerontology/Nutrition; Kinesiology, Sports Management or Physical Education; Ice Rink Operations Manager; Golf Operation or Programming is preferred.

Certification and Other Requirement

• Valid Class C Drivers License
• American Red Cross Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid
• American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of hire
• Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator Certification, or the ability to obtain within three (3) months of hire

Hours/Work Schedule

• This is a full time position with benefits.
• Ability to work a varied schedule that includes working mornings, evenings and weekends.
• Schedule may be modified if department needs arise.

Overall Physical Strength Demands

• Light - Exerting up to 20 lbs. occasionally, 10 lbs. frequently, or negligible amounts constantly OR requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

• Reading - Intermediate - Ability to read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, dictionaries, thesauruses, and encyclopedias. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
• Math - Intermediate - Ability to deal with system of real numbers; practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios/proportions and measurement. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
• Writing- Intermediate - Ability to write reports, prepare business letters, expositions, and summaries with proper format, punctuation, spelling, and grammar, using all parts of speech. Ordinarily, such education is obtained in high school up to college. However, it may be obtained from experience and self-study.
• Managerial - Receives limited directions. The employee normally performs the duty assignment according to his or her own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary. The assignment may be reviewed upon completion. Performance is reviewed periodically.
• Budget Responsibility - Does research for documents, compiles data for computer entry, and/or enters or oversees data entry. Has responsibility for monitoring budget expenditures (typically non-discretionary expenditures) for a work unit of less than department size (programs, activities, projects or small organizational units)
• Supervisory / Organizational Control - Work requires supervising and monitoring performance for a regular group of employees or a work unit including providing input on hiring/disciplinary actions and work objectives/effectiveness, performance evaluations, and realigning work as needed. A first line supervisor typically performs these functions.
