Job summary

Indiana University Bloomington seeks student Lifeguards for Recreational Sports. Duties include supervising lifeguards, ensuring safety, and supporting aquatic program operations on campus.

Required: high school knowledge and current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification. Preferred: some college and prior leadership of aquatic staff. This is an in-person, part-time role with a flexible schedule and IU-wide benefits.

Qualifications

• Current American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification Upon Date of Hire.
• 1 semester experience as a lifeguard with IU Recreational Sports.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to lead, mentor, and provide feedback to peers.
• Knowledge of aquatic safety practices and emergency response.

Responsibilities

• Serves as a front-line leader within the aquatics program, providing high-quality relational service to participants while overseeing lifeguards during shifts.
• Ensures participant safety, effective communication, and smooth daily operations by managing staff performance, enforcing policies, and coordinating aquatic program transitions.
• Performs as a key liaison between lifeguards and professional staff and supports facility operations and emergency response as needed.
• Ensures participant safety and provide accurate information and assistance to all users.
• Oversees lifeguard staff to maintain proper surveillance, rescue readiness, and station rotation.
• Delegates tasks, confirm completion, and provide immediate feedback to staff.
• Enforces RecSports policies and educate participants and staff on procedures.
• Assists with facility setup and transitions between programs and user groups.
• Monitors facility cleanliness and organization across aquatic spaces and equipment.
• Serves as primary communication liaison between lifeguards, participants, and professional staff.
• Completes reports, conduct inspections, and support emergency response when needed.
